David E. Shaw is the chief scientist of D. E. Shaw Research, where he is engaged in hands-on research in the field of computational biochemistry. His lab focuses on the design of novel algorithms and machine architectures for high-speed biomolecular simulations and on the use of such simulations to study atomic-level structural changes in proteins, nucleic acids, and other biologically significant molecules. The group’s long-term goal is to significantly advance the process of drug discovery, providing a potentially powerful new tool for combating a wide range of different diseases.Dr. Shaw received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1980, served on the faculty of the Computer Science Department at Columbia until 1986, and founded the D. E. Shaw group in 1988. He initiated his work on computational biochemistry in 2001, and in 2005 resumed his affiliation with Columbia, where he serves as an adjunct professor and senior research fellow. He was appointed to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology by President Clinton in 1994, and again by President Obama in 2009. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007, to the National Academy of Engineering in 2012, and to the National Academy of Sciences in 2014. In recognition of his contributions and those of his research group to the field of high-performance computing, he is a two-time winner (in 2009 and 2014) of the ACM Gordon Bell Prize, and received the Seymour Cray Award in 2018.
