This assignment was in the Network Design and Construction Branch which had the responsibility for delivering the core network for the customer facing business units of Telstra to sell as product to the companies’ customers. The duties involved; Project Design Co-ordination to ensure timely delivery of technical specifications to the field work force to meet critical customer dates. The production of Design Specifications for complex and critical projects involving planning and network integration of new equipment into an existing diverse network, utilising the resources that were available at the best cost/performance compromise for Telstra. The development and Improvement of Design Processes and IT Systems to achieve a streamlined electronic method of delivering Design Information/Specifications to Designers, constructors and managers to allow productivity improvements and monitoring that wasn’t possible with previous methods of operation.

Working in the Design office I was responsible for delivering key Project Designs on time and to a high quality to ensure timely delivery of projects by the customer required dates. This involved liaison with key stakeholders in the Planning, materials, construction and Network operations areas to ensure that all customer expectations were understood, were achievable and were agreed upon by all.In parallel with my normal responsibilities I was involved in the production of software packages with the goal of improving office productivity and processes and to get away from the many paper based system to utilise more electronic methods of operation. This involved developments in Visual Basic, Excel Macro Language, Word Basic, Microsoft Access databases and client/server systems with Oracle databases at the back end. This required involvement in all aspects of the development process from proof of concept, to producing business cases for approval to proceed, to gathering user requirement specifications, to programming key aspects of the systems within a team of programmers, user acceptance testing, user training and system implementation.
