David Eder work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Affiliate Graduate Faculty: Physics And Astronomy; Senior Computational Scientist: Its
Direct graduate students, PostDoc, and researchers in computational physics. Conduct research using 3D multi-physics high performance computational tools, such as the PISALE code. Applications include droplet dynamics of XFEL heated targets, impacts of raindrops on hypersonic vehicles, and groundwater flow.
Quantum Computing Sme, Application Engineer
Leading effort to determine appropriate quantum computing resources for DoD's National Security needs. Evaluation of appropriate applications for near-term quantum universal gate and quantum annealing computers. In particular, investigating potential benefits of quantum machine learning in a range of fields. Working with other agencies, NSF, DOE, etc., to determine quantum hardware and software stack requirements.
Group Leader
David Eder is a leading scientist with a highly distinguished career in computational modeling and managing complex teams and campaigns. He established and led the computational program to protect the optics and diagnostics on the recently completed 4 billion dollar National Ignition Facility (NIF). He is a recognized leader in high performance computing applications giving tutorials at international venues such as the IEEE SC series. Eder received an Alexander von Humboldt Award to expand his research on x-ray lasers at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany. As Group Leader for NIF Modeling, he received numerous program awards including one for developing disposable debris shields, which are critical for affordable operation. He managed efforts to calculate neutron dose levels for the entire NIF structure needed for worker radiation dose assessments. Eder also led an experimental program to measure the properties of electro-magnetic pulses (EMP) from high-intensity short-pulse lasers. His models of EMP and subsequent mitigation efforts are helping protect NIF during short-pulse laser operation. He has served as a consultant to DoD on topics related to space debris. Eder’s modeling of droplet dynamics for EUV lithography applications contributed to a dramatic increase in source performance. His modeling of bulk motions induced by top/bottom laser asymmetries helps explain observed inertial fusion yield reduction. His hands-on computational experience includes emerging architectures such as Intel’s Knights Landing as well as parallel programing models including HPX, MPI, OpenMP, OpenCL, and others. Eder has over 100 publications and over 1000 citations.
