About David Eisenberg

The Eisenberg lab for Electrochemistry and Energy is looking for excellent MSc / PhD / postdoc researchers, interested in electrochemical energy storage! We study the fundamental electro-catalysis and materials chemistry of fuel cells. We seek new routes for rational - rather than serendipitous - design of carbon electrocatalysts. We study both cathode and anode reactions: from oxygen reduction to oxidations of alternative fuels.

The Eisenberg lab for Electrochemistry and Energy is interested in the fundamental electro-catalysis and materials chemistry of fuel cells. In particular, carbon materials – highly porous, partially graphitic, and hetero-doped – are rising electrodes in electrochemical energy storage. This is a curious twist of history: for many millennia carbon was mostly a low-value energy source, only good for burning up. These days, we find carbon electrodes in power sources as diverse as fuel cells, supercapacitors and batteries. Our group seeks new routes for rational - rather than serendipitous - design of carbon materials as fuel cell electrodes. We build new carbon architectures and tailor their active sites. We look at their activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) -- the current bottleneck for most fuel cell technologies -- and for the oxidation of revolutionary alternative fuels.
  • University Of Amsterdam
    Postdoctoral Fellow
University Of Amsterdam Feb 2015 - Jan 2017
Postdoctoral fellow, leading the electrocatalysis and supercapacitors team in the group of Prof. Gadi Rothenberg (Heterogeneous Catalysis and Sustainable Chemistry) in the University of Amsterdam.
  • The University Of Texas At Austin
    Postdoctoral Fellow
The University Of Texas At Austin Sep 2014 - Jan 2015
With Prof. Adam Heller And Prof. Buddie Mullins
A short yet highly successful independent project, focusing on unique carbon materials for electrocatalysis, batteries, and other various energy-related applications. Currently, the work is being continued in parallel in UT Austin and the University of Amsterdam.
  • The University Of Texas At Austin
    Fullbright/Ilan-Ramon Postdoctoral Fellow
The University Of Texas At Austin Sep 2012 - Aug 2014
    Group Of Prof. Allen Bard
I came to the Bard lab to learn electrochemistry from one of the most accomplished electrochemists in the world. Over two intense and exciting years, I have learned many fundamental and practical aspects of photo-electrochemistry, semiconductor physics, energy storage, electrochemical simulations, scanning electrochemical microscopy, and more.
  • Rafael Advanced Defense Systems
    Researcher
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Sep 2006 - Aug 2012
I served as a scientist, leading a small team of engineers and technicians in several exciting projects related to Material Science.Working in industry while pursuing my PhD gave me a unique outlook at the mutual interests of industry and academia, as well as a deeper understanding of Material Science on all levels of a real-life project, from theoretical analysis to hardcore engineering.
  • Hebrew University
Research And Teaching Assistant In Chemistry
    Hebrew University Aug 2003 - Nov 2011
I have spent two years during my BSc studies as an undergraduate researcher with Prof. Mordecai Rabinovitz, working with (then) graduate student Ivan Aprahamian on self assembly of highly charged fullerenes and fullerene fragments. In the coming 6 years, as I pursued my MSc and PhD studieds, I worked with Prof. Roy Shenhar as a graduate researcher. My research focused on understanding highly charged fullerene fragments (oligo-corannulenes) using advanced NMR techniques. My favorite part about my research was the 'riddle solving' - both in the interpretation of complex data sets, and the general sense of following your curiosity into uncharted lands...I also taught in several capacities in the Hebrew University, including as a personal mentor in various programs (high-school or university students with learning disabilities), as a TA in Physical Chemistry with Prof. Avner Treinin, and as laboratory instructor in chemical labs (e.g. the special training program for the Angolan forensic team).
