I'm a lover of interesting problems and creative solutions. In my work, data is the connection that fuels deeper collaboration and new ways to be creative.I work on data science and Big Data in the materials domain as part of the the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI). My background leans heavily toward the experimental with experience in high-resolution electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray methods, and neutron scattering. These days I'm particularly focused on data streaming and event-triggered infrastructures and am an advocate for FAIR data principles. My research group integrates streaming data infrastructure with AI method development for discovery and development of novel materials. We sometimes look like we're goofing around at the white board, but we're really thinking about problems that range from synthesis and characterization of 2D materials to data analysis of high-strain-rate shock and ballistic experiments and anything in between. Materials Research Data Infrastructure is always on my mind, but it doesn't consume me. Ask me anything about coaching youth wheelchair basketball, running local math circles, or why I own too many instruments. Simple goal: create meaning by learning something new and laughing!
