At HMI, a non-profit organization dedicated to a kinder, wiser, and more compassionate world, I manage and direct the product development team that includes user research, UX/UI designers, quality assurance, mobile and web developers, data engineers, and cloud infrastructure devops. I coordinate with research and measures, curriculum development, and customer team leads to establish and manage the product roadmap. HMI currently supports a cross-platform mobile app offered for free (since early 2020) to individual users as well as a workplace solution designed for employers and a research edition of its product used by HMI’s partner organization at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, the Center for Healthy Minds along with a growing number of research groups in the US and internationally.

As Wellbe’s Chief Technology Officer, I participated on the executive management team, owning the technology strategy and roadmap, participating in Product strategy and design, and mentoring product managers. As Wellbe has grown its SaaS subscription revenue business, I have hired and manage an agile development team that has ranged from 3 to 12 members, encompassing architecture, programming, devops, design, QA and technical support. Wellbe released its first product, a cloud-hosted, SaaS web and mobile patient engagement application n 2011, and its second version in 2014, which re-designed and expanded its solution to provide patients with just-in-time informational notifications, check-ins and activities to help them prepare for and recover from surgical procedures and other treatment episodes. The second version also added advance care coordination capabilities with tasking, workflow management tools, analytics and integration capabilities.

GoalKards’ mission was to use technology to enable youth to be responsible for their extracurricular activities (music, sports, arts, etc). I oversaw development and initial launch of a suite of age-appropriate, web-based tools to encourage young people, in coordination with their parents and activity providers, to manage and track their extracurricular activities and to develop positive goals and healthy life habits. Participated in a company pivot that brought this thinking to healthcare.

Technical direction and lead development of WHS internal and external web sites, web applications and digital collections. Led major redesign of public website, working with Information Architect. Responsible for evaluation and purchase of application to federate WHS content data repositories.

Hired by founder/CEO to expand and commercialize a grant-funded prototype web application to engage and teach reading strategies to struggling middle-school readers. Responsible for technology strategic direction and decision-making as related to business planning and operations. Served as architect and technical lead for the SaaS application and database development, from initial design to initial launch. Built and managed a 6 person development team, including programmers, designer, QA and support staff. Hired and supervised third party outsourced development.

Lead development of a large-scale Analytics system for UW’s Learning Management System. Managed a team of six developers for multi-year, foreign language grant project to create lesson authoring tools for Russian, Spanish and English as a Second Language. Managed development and roll-out of HIPAA online training project providing instruction to all UW Madison campus medical colleges, research departments and service providers. Provided ongoing consulting and development for faculty grant-funded projects in various disciplines including Agronomy, Archeology, Classics, and Philosophy.

Worked with founder/CEO to establish early stage strategic technology vision, infrastructure planning, and budget for a white-labeled streaming media application. Served as architect and lead developer for initial product, a “web radio” application, including streaming audio and real-time user interaction, targeted to corporate customers for branded information and customer communication and community-building.

Worked with founder/CEO to develop a loyalty-program management platform, designed to enable fungible movement of rewards across programs. Acquired by 24/7 Media in 2000. I was responsible for technology vision, infrastructure planning, budgets, and relationship-building with clients and partners, managing the technology partnership with a leading Wall St. brokerage firm. Served as architect and lead developer for early product concepts and initial launch.

Hired by Apple University, Apple’s management training organization, to lead the transition of their training and instructional services from print and CD-ROM to Apple’s corporate intranet. Developed an Online Management Learning Center with content repository. Directed efforts to transition their training registration database to the Intranet. Migrated several management training applications from CD-ROM to the web.

Working with the CTO, I designed, developed, launched, and maintained TriNet’s web-based Human Resources applications, including a web-based Java application to manage online employee benefit enrollment for a Human Resources management company. Supervised outsourced re-design and development of corporate web site and client extranet.

Initially hired as a database editor and network administrator by this San Francisco multimedia publishing company, I was promoted to Director of Technology when the company pivoted to provide web development and content publishing. I developed web sites for major clients, including Goldman Sachs, AT&T, and Silicon Graphics, and led development of a multi-partner high speed media sharing network, sponsored by Pacific Bell.

Provided classroom training and support for professors using internet technology for instruction. Conceived, designed, built and solicited contributions to the Reading and Composition Database, an online resource of teaching materials for graduate instructors teaching undergraduate composition and literature courses.
