ReporterE&E News Jan 2014 - PresentWashington, Dc, UsI write features and daily news that explore how the electric vehicle is disrupting American life. From manufacturing to car rentals, from outdoor recreation to mining, from bike lanes to gas stations, the effects are profound. -
ColumnistSierra Magazine Mar 2010 - Feb 2014Oakland, Ca, UsI wrote 'Innovate,' the technology column in Sierra, the nation's largest-circulation environmental news magazine. Every issue I took a look at a cutting-edge technology that promised to deliver electricity that is cleaner than coal. A colorful infographic was coupled with a profile of a leader in the field. This unique approach to storytelling won a Maggie award in 2010. 'Innovate' had me wear an extraordinary number of hats. I was obliged to be a graphic artist (creating and drafting the rough sketch of the infographic), a tech expert (explaining the nuts and bolts of complicated technology), a people person (profiling my fascinating subjects) and a team player (collaborating with editors, the art department, and a graphic artist to make the final product awesome). BloggerForbes.Com Mar 2012 - Dec 2013Jersey City, Nj, UsI wrote the "Man vs. Nature" blog for Forbes, exploring the business of energy and climate change. Many stories got several thousand hits and were the subject of much Twittering and commenting. -
Freelance WriterNew York Times, Popular Science, Smithsonian, Others Jan 2008 - Dec 2013I wrote enterprise stories about energy and technology for publications including Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, Smithsonian, Huffington Post, Sierra, Workforce.com, The Guardian, Yale Environment 360, and The New York Times. As a freelancer, one's success relies on hunting down fresh stories and angles and making one's ideas compelling to busy editors. I succeeded in getting my stories published in some of the nation's biggest magazines and newspapers through a sense of curiosity and a hard work ethic. I wrote mostly about the overlap between energy and technology -- two fields that are transforming life in the 21st Century -- and forayed into the business and political aspects of same. I relished enterprise work and traveled extensively in India in order to unearth some untold stories from the world's second-most-populous country.Below are a few of the stories I'm most proud of: 1) My first story in the New York Times, about a cloud-tracking technology with applications where you wouldn't expect; 2) a series of profiles in Sierra magazine about a new class of inventor-athletes; 3) my test drive of India's daring new electric car.

Managing EditorMatter Network Jan 2010 - Jul 2012San Francisco, California, UsI provided editorial direction for a news site covering the business of clean technology and sustainability. At the time, Matter Network was a leading hub for news on the topic, aggregating content from 20+ partner sites and serving as one of Reuters' main sources of green-business news. My job was to make Matter an interesting and lively destination. I did so by aggregating and curating the most important news from our partners, while also writing stories, seeking out contributors and editing their contributions. I also handled the nuts-and-bolts of formatting stories through a CMS, and then managed the hand-off of these duties to a third-party vendor. I tracked analytics and used the results to boost traffic to the site. -
Lifestyle EditorSierra Magazine 2008 - 2008I served as interim lifestyle editor of the largest-circulation environmental newsmagazine in the U.S.I was chosen based on my performance as a writer for the magazine, and the position likely would have become permanent had I not relocated to the East Coast. My role was to edit much of the front of the book. I established themes for each issue and a publication schedule, wrote items and assigned others to freelancers, and assigned art.

Personal Trainer And Boot Camp InstructorFerris Fitness 2001 - 2008I helped hundreds of people achieve better fitness through a training business I established and ran in a community just north of San Francisco. With individual clients, I established fitness and endurance-training programs, led training sessions, and provided inspiration. Most of my clients stayed on for years.I also created a series of outdoor boot camps, leading small groups on fitness adventures twice a week through the parks and wildlands of Marin County. In this capacity I also served as a contractor to the City of Mill Valley, encouraging employees through fun and challenging workouts outdoors twice a week. If this sounds like a drastic departure from the rest of the jobs on my resume, it was. Through this training business I developed skills that elude many writers, such as the ability to provide structure for others, be an articulate public speaker, create a positive atmosphere and inspire people to action.

Staff WriterContra Costa Times 1998 - 2000UsI worked as city-hall reporter for the leading daily newspaper of Contra Costa County, covering first the city of Richmond and then the city of Berkeley. I also was recruited to fill in for several months as the chief reporter covering Contra Costa Superior Court. -
Staff WriterFremont Argus 1996 - 1998I provided daily coverage of crime, fires, and courts for the leading newspaper in the cites of Fremont, Newark and Union City, a populous area north of Silicon Valley. My biggest scoop was a five-story package I wrote about Jonathan Tampico, a former government laser scientist who went on the lam after he was discovered to be serial collector of child pornography. My story was picked up and broadcast by America's Most Wanted, leading to Tampico's arrest in Texas and a 30-year term in federal prison.
