About David Fixler

My practice is focused on all aspects of working with existing buildings and sites, from heritage and conservation planning to adaptive use, spanning the 18th to the 20th centuries, with a particular focus on buildings of the mid-century modern era. Though this experience crosses a variety of building and client types, I have concentrated on works for institutions of higher learning and government, with a parallel and sometimes related specialty in academic and research libraries and archives. I frequently write and speak on architecture and preservation related topics, and have spoken at numerous colleges, universities, professional symposia and conferences throughout the Americas, Europe and Australia.Specialties: President, DOCOMOMO-US/New EnglandCo-Chair, Association for Preservation Technology Technical Committee on Modern Heritage (APT TC-MH), Preservation Officer Society of Architectural Historians

I have directed work on numerous rehabilitation, addition and adaptive re-use projects for historic properties including work for many of the top colleges and universities in America, the Federal Government and the United Nations. This includes a particular focus on buildings of the modern movement, including works by Alvar Aalto, Eero Saarinen, I. M. Pei, Paul Rudolph and Louis Kahn. This practice will concentrate - though by no means exclusively - on all aspects of working with historic structures and sites with a particular emphasis on conservation planning and adaptive use for 20th century modern properties, and the renewal of library and archival facilities. My present practice includes Conservation Management Planning, and consulting to architects, construction managers and institutional building owners as an expert in working with a wide variety of historic structures. I write and speak frequently on design and preservation topics - again with a particular focus on modern buildings and sites - and have delivered lectures throughout the US and in 12 countries on 4 continents.
