In my professional capacity I apply critical thinking and analysis during the care process to provide accurate advice and health information to patients to empower them to act upon the advice given. I work independently and am responsible and accountable for managing my own approach to workload, risk assessment, risk management and clinical governance utilizing skills in mental health, child protection and other aspects of general nursing. Working in telehealth has vastly expanded my knowledge base, service delivery skills and given me access to a wide and up-to-date range of information and resources. In this role I was able to build a range of skills that led to me travelling and working in many of establishments both male and female, latterly in an audit function. Nursing in prisons is comparable to working as a practice nurse but is arguably more challenging, with higher a concentration of patients needing help for mental health and substance misuse problems. In this role I acquired many of the public health skills associated with primary care nursing, including health needs assessment, screening and health promotion. Establishing and maintaining positive relationships in this unique environment requires a special blend of compassion, people skills and vigilance as well as strong clinical competence and an understanding of the pressures felt by both prisoners and the multidisciplinary team. I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1992 and my first job was in a small medical and surgical rehab unit in a community hospital. In this role I was able to develop my knowledge of community services for the elderly and the importance of the wider multi-disciplinary team in rehabilitating people back into their communities
