Retired from the daily grind, but inflation and unexpected medical costs motivate me to seek income for 2023. I would like to work one-on-one writing or editing, and would be happy tutoring reading skills, but almost always end up carpenter or cabinetmaker, which is fine: I'm good at all that...I have worn many hats, some of which are strange (airship rigger?), but the thread that connects them all is integrity and a fascination with traditional ways and means (and tools). So as a writer or cabinetmaker or a sailor or a photographer or guitar (now ukulele) player, the instruments or processes hearken back. I write most days with my Pelikan Souveran, my Gibson is acoustic, a 1953 SJ, I regularly rely on my 1960's Stanley Yankee screwdriver, and none of my wood tools are cordless, if indeed electricity is involved at all- and as of Autumn, 2020 are again in use building houses as a volunteer.Much of my daily routine centers around Bella, my 20 year old beagle, since we seem to be growing old together with similar limitations. Beyond that, and the dabbling in the above-mentioned hobbies, there is a lot of reading and unfocused research - the legacy of majoring in English and being fascinated with phrasing. Finally got a chance to put once much used carpentry skills to work for Habitat for Humanity -- I wear my little H4H framing hammer necklace, and stairways, all the door openings and window casings in both houses are mine to finish.I still say, in answer to the question, “What will you do now that you are retired?” I am keeping an open mind and watching carefully as opportunities come my way. I am enjoying not having anything specific still, and am content with simply being for the present. Contact me if you wish to correspond; the beauty of writing to an English major is you can count on a response.
