David is a University of Otago Emeritus Professor of Sports Medicine now retired to Auckland New Zealand. From 1981 to 2016 he was employed by the University of Otago in academic and clinical roles. His undergraduate qualifications are in medicine & surgery (MB ChB) with postgraduate Fellowship of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians (FACSP) and honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine (College of Physicians and Surgeons) with specialist vocational registration from the Medical Council of New Zealand. David's research, publications & teaching focussed on paediatric sports medicine, aquatic sport, drug misuse & bioethics of sports medicine with over 120 peer reviewed publications including book chapters.Currently David serves international committees; FINA Sports Medicine, World Rugby Anti-Doping, WADA Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee, WADA Health, Medicine & Research Committee. In addition he chairs TUE Committees of Drug-Free Sport NZ, FINA & World Rugby.David was a national swimming & surf champion. A semi-finalist in the 200m butterfly at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics he swam at the 1962 and 1966 Commonwealth Games winning gold & bronze medals in Kingston 1966. He was inducted into the NZ Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. He has attended 10 Summer Olympics as competitor, team doctor, Chef-de-Mission & Medical Commissioner & Rugby World Cups (2011 and 2015) as Anti-Doping Commissioner. Former Chair of the NZ Drowning Prevention Council, Deputy Chair of the Hillary Commission & Chair of Drug-Free Sport NZ David has maintained a lifelong interest in national & international sport and sports medicine, complementing academic interests & informing research focus.David was awarded an OBE in 1996 & became a Companion of the Order of New Zealand (CMNZ) in 2006 for services to medicine & sport. He is also holder of an Olympic Order, Life Membership of Sports Medicine NZ, a Lifetime Award from Sport NZ & Life Membership of Swimming NZ.
