Designed non-human primate and mouse studies for a novel allogeneic nipple graft, co-wrote successfully funded SBIR ($256K) and two phase 1 STTR grants ($251K each), and managed a direct report. Co-developed a patented technology using hydrogel-based drug delivery systems in human skin for treating burns, hernia repairs and chronic wounds.

Developed a novel cell-based assay to measure drug effects on the invasive behavior of metastatic cells using patterned substrates and super-resolution microscopy. Mentored 2 graduate students on experimental design and execution.

Led a multi-institutional research project that identified a biomechanical signaling axis between the cell and its microenvironment and showed this function to be defective in cells bearing laminopathic-like mutations. Research resulted in a highly publicized publication featured as an “Editor’s Choice” in Science. Collaborated on several successful, multidiscipline projects characterizing the oncogenic roles of Wnt and Rho pathway proteins in diffuse large B cell lymphoma and breast cancer.

Woods Hole, Ma

Elucidated the relationship of calcium dynamics and cell directionality during migration, showing this process requires force-sensitive ion channels. Led cloning efforts generating expression constructs and stable cell lines to study spatiotemporal effects of Ca2+ and other analytes (H+, ATP) on cell signaling and behavior. Identified and functionally characterized a novel required Zn2+ ion transporter involved in neural development and neurite extension. Ordered and systemized reagents and consumables, maintained equipment and lab safety procedures, and provided technical support for 3 investigative teams within the center.

Biochemically characterized a putative chromatin remodeling protein from Arabidopsis thaliana. Served as a teaching assistant for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology laboratory courses for 6 semesters and was a summer course instructor for an introduction course to biology.

Falmouth, Ma

Processed blood from the Atlantic horseshoe crab for bacterial endotoxin detection reagents. Gained understanding of cGMP in a FDA-regulated and ISO9001 certified pharmaceutical company.

New Bedford, Ma

Working within the Coastal Systems Group while an undergraduate, performed field-based sample collection and analysis of water samples for levels of dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, phosphorus, and elemental composition. This work was part of the Massachusetts Estuaries Project that aimed to classify the nitrogen sensitivity of southeastern Massachusetts's coastal bays and estuaries.
