NCFE acquired Peer Tutor (previously called Peerz Academy) which is an edtech start-up designed to democratise one to one tutoring by making it low cost, accessible anytime anywhere, uses peer tutors who understand what students are going through and provides highest levels of safeguarding. The verified tutors are young people who have recently achieved a grade 6 (B for previous GCSE grading) in the same qualification that the student is working towards and have progressed to the next level qualification, eg, GCSE to A level. Empirical evidence shows that student are willing to learn from peers more readily and one to one tutoring advances a student learning by up to six months.The business model is it helps young people with learning support if they find a topic difficult, confusing or want to have full mastery of the subject. Students sign-in to and purchase low cost services. The services include:1. Instant feedback from a tutor on a question the student is stuck on.2. Essay review and improvement suggestions.3. 30 minute one to one live session on a topic with follow up exercises.All safeguarding issues are incorporated into the platform and personal data or photos are not shared. In addition, the platform has sophisticated algorithms that identifies any anomalies in relation to safeguarding.While CEO at NCFE, we made an initial investment into Peer Tutor to prove the concept by testing a live version of the platform. At this point, I was a Board member of Peer Tutor. After proof of concept was successful, NCFE purchased Peer Tutor and made further investment into scaling the business. I remained a non-executive director of Peers Tutor until I left NCFE in April 2018.

Last year they provided over 2.9 million assessments to the post-16 employability and skills sector.Its unique assessments, resources and summative assessments can transform how education providers approach Functional Skills, GCSE and the employability skills development of learners.The Skills Forward eLearning, assessment and skills development platform software is used by colleges, training providers and employers who want accurate assessments of learner ongoing progress. The platform enables providers to digitally capture evidence of a learner’s skills, knowledge and occupational competency and supports their further skills development with high-quality resources.After acquisition I became the non-executive chair of Skills Forward and under NCFE's tenure it developed a single e-assessments for the simultaneous diagnosis of a students English & maths capability against Functional Skills and GCSE qualification specifications. Other achievements included a re-brand of the business, recruiting a leader from an independent training provider to be Managing Director, investment into the people and culture, investment through infrastructure integration through group support for IT, sales, finance, HR, Compliance and Audit, Marketing, Facilities Management and Innovation Management.I stepped as Chair when I left NCFE in April 2019.

I was a Non-executive Director of REED NCFE LLP on behalf of NCFE. REED NCFE delivered mindset learning using the 3G model, employment skills and techniques, found part-time and full-time jobs, Apprenticeships, Traineeships and work placements for Further Education (FE) college student in their locality and coached students in preparation for interviews. This concept originated from NCFE and I pitched it to James Reed (Chair, Reed Recruitment Group). James agreed to a joint venture and we built the business targeting FE colleges and Universities. During its 8 yers of incorporation James was either Chair or a NED of the REED NCFE Board.REED NCFE's outcomes included:➤ 100k plus jobs for FE colleges’ learners.➤ Revenue to £4.5m by 2015.➤ Profit generating.The partners agreed to wind up the business and dissolve the partnership as the model had served its purpose. The wind up objectives were to deliver a smooth transition for each customer to an alternative solution, or an orderly closure of the customer's REED NCFE operations at their location, ensure that customers remained advocates of the achievements and enhance brand reputation.
