Second Officer
First Officer
The best learning experience was running two busy yard periods in place of the Captain, the second with a full super structure paint job and both with hurricanes passing close by Thunderbolt shipyard, this forced a lot of creative thinking to get the yacht back into service on time with the yard in some disarray after the TRS’s departed.
Captain/Engineer
Challenge balancing the bridge, deck and engineering roles and well as many jobs ashore at the estate and businesses.
Relief Captain/Engineer
Undertook two busy refit periods. Navigating in thick fog amongst lobster pots in Maine was a learning experience.
Second Officer
My biggest learning experience on this vessel was encountering Somali Pirates while on watch transiting Bab al-Mandab Strait in the HRA, even the moderate sea state made spotting the 4 skiffs difficult and it was our Marine lookout on the sundeck who spotted them in time to allow us to react. The other big challenge on Meamina was chartering in the Maldives with all the charts, except the anchorage and port at Male, made in the 1830’s by lead line surveys with no geodetic reference datum for accuracy.
Mate/Engineer
Beyond was a busy yacht to man having just 4 crew to do charters, yard periods and cross the Atlantic. I learnt much engineering and was able to take over the role from the Captain.
Chief Mate
By far the biggest test on this boat was completing a mast to waterline paint and varnish job in just 3 weeks before the Monaco GP which was a very busy charter with 60 day guests and night time parties for 450, followed by an intense season of charters.
Deckhand
The biggest challenge was a month operating down on the Antarctic Peninsular with difficult navigation amongst pack ice, tabular bergs and thick fog. Some high winds encountered in the Bransfield Strait hid the growlers from radar and the white caps made them hard to spot until a couple of cables out. Also, the anchor watch keeper had to be constantly vigilant as shifting winds meant some of our anchorages were closed by the ice very quickly.
Deckhand
Built in 1966 this old yacht required constant rust, paint and varnish work, also lean manned running with 8 crew but designed for 12.
