My career over the last ten years has been fairly evenly shared between my time in varying operations roles within Petrol and Convenience as well as building a national team who provided a range of support services at Sodexo, one of the largest companies in the world.I really enjoy working in retail for a number of reasons. This often seems an entry level job for a lot of front line staff and site managers and I find it extremely rewarding helping these individuals build their skills and confidence whether they be direct line employees or the employees of the franchisees I support. Given the cultural mix in this industry, I have also become better a more effectively manage in a culturally diverse workplace. In the last 18 months alone I have mentored and supported four team members develop from front line employees to assistant managers and on to become managers of high profile sites for Ampol. Despite leaving the organisation, they still keep in touch. The time I have spent in a support function gives me a unique insight into both sides of the corporate fence. Whether it be delivering projects, negotiating with new clients, mobilising new sites, conducting profitability and productivity reviews of existing business or delivering a retail promotional calendar to help grow sales, I was always aware of the need to support my customer though in this role, they were largely internal.Optimising resources and balancing commercial and operational levers to deliver sales growth and great bottom line results is also extremely rewarding. There is nothing like the feeling of achieving a fantastic profit result. Making a profit is a big motivator for me, no less so when I am making that profit money for my employer. The one thing that I firmly believe has helped me succeed in my 20 plus years of multi-site management whether it be in company operated sites or the franchise world, has been my ability to build report and effective relationships with staff at all levels. My foundation for this has always been built on mutual respect.Whilst I am open to other opportunities, I see myself as a retailer and believe my future remains in this sector. As the sector moves more and more into non fuel revenue especially from coffee and food, I see my hospitality and QSR background being a huge benefit.
