Providing the highest level of visibility, discipline and knowledge should always be the fundamental goal of a finance organization. Whether the company is large, small or medium-sized, and regardless of industry, executing this outcome benefits internal operations while, at the same time adds far greater credibility externally with customers, vendors, and investors. In small companies with the prospect for significant near-term growth creating palpable excitement, the supporting infrastructure is often less mature. “Running at full speed” often leads to surprises usually due to lack of communication and/or inadequate information. Young companies make great strides early, investing in engineering, sales, marketing, (and production, if applicable). However, often ignored and potentially at significant peril, are financial fundamentals, as well as the associated information, and the discipline they provide. In many cases I’ve witnessed this resulting in slowed momentum, or even lost opportunities, including but not limited to:● Disaggregation; groups operating in a vacuum due to lack of coordination/communication ● Unoptimized or lost cost-saving opportunities ● Inadequate system design leading to inefficient workarounds● Erroneous financial reporting leading too lack of credibility with investorso poorly informed investment decisions o Additional costs incurred to rectify● Less favorable funding available due to lack of readinessImplementing and improving financial fundamentals can bring management anxiety and the illusion of slowing progress. However, they can also bring illumination, visibility and the credibility young companies need to position themselves for continued growth and the next phase.
