This was the reality for us as Senior Living Operators, and it was the hardest month on record in my then 8-year career. In March of 2021, our newly formed company acquired an inspiring and optimistic Regional Director of Operations, David Gustafson. David infused a sense of hope and a brighter future for our organization. It felt like we had a captain at the helm of our ship who was capable of sailing steadily in stormy seas, headed for a calm shore. Among many of his excellent qualities, David was approachable, transparent, collaborative, decisive and strategic, qualities that make an excellent leader. David's trust in my and others' abilities, and his respect for us as an integral part of the organization, made us feel valued and appreciated. As an Operations Leader in charge of multiple units, David briefly served as an interim administrator for our business unit, in addition to supporting executive directors and business office managers. As I watched him recruit candidates for frontline and leadership roles, it became apparent David had a gift for inspiring others as he made decisions for who would fill not just essential jobs, but some of the critical leadership roles a well. Under David's leadership, I had the privilege of working with one of our highly talented and sophisticated executive directors, as well as having the opportunity to collaborate with other talented professionals. It's no surprise that during this time I experienced both professional growth and increased job satisfaction. David is intentional and strategic about selecting leaders who foster a collaborative work environment, encourage teamwork, invest time and resources into developing their staff, and see value in people's individual and collective efforts and achievements.
