About David Hahn
I am currently a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley, conducting research in the Rayne Research Group - Additive Manufacturing and Metamaterials Laboratory. My research is on investigating manufacturing processes in large area projection micro stereolithography (LAPuSL) and developing new multi-material printing techniques. Previously, I was a Mechanical Design Engineer at OFS Fitel LLC (also known as Optical Fiber Solutions, Furukawa Information Technologies and Telecommunications), supporting VAD (Vapor Axial Deposition) facility in the upstream manufacture of preforms for optical fibers. I mainly designed (w/ engineering) mechanical hardware/equipment to (1) improve material handling of heavy, hot, and highly pure silica glass products in a cleanroom environment, (2) implement safety features to ensure operator safety, (3) improve existing designs and reverse-engineer old mechanical parts for glass production, and (4) solve many other mechanical manufacturing-process-related problems. I received Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, with a focus in Manufacturing. I completed one-semester-long graduate research project on laser assisted micro milling funded by Corning Inc and finished a major graduate thesis research project on polymer assisted mechanical exfoliation of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite sheets; The former project was on producing micro features that are 100 - 150 um wide on a piece of die and the latter project involves reliably thinning the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) with mechanical effects. I have numerous experience with CAD (Solidworks, AutoCAD Inventor), FEA (ANSYS), programming (C++, Matlab, Python, Arduino, G-code for CNC machining), simulation tools (HyperWorks for CNC machining), machining (milling, lathing, etc), nanotechnology (Cleanroom experience, photolithography, etching), and characterization tools (optical/confocal microscope, SEM, hardness tester, etc). Additionally, I am bilingual in English and Korean.
Listed skills include Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Processes, Nanotechnology, Finite Element Analysis, and 11 others.
