The State of California has extended its Film Production Tax Incentive to 2025; and with the recent expansion of the "TMZ" (Thirty Mile (studio) Zone) an additional Ten miles into the Antelope Valley, a good part of Palmdale is now within the new "Secondary Zone." Having worked in Live Action Film Production since 1980, I am delighted to be a Consultant / Contractor to the City of Palmdale as their "pointman" regarding Filming and Permit requests; and as I work under the umbrella of the Department of Economic Development, it is my goal to help promote Palmdale as a "Film Friendly" destination to all Film Makers, from the Major Studios to small Independent Production Companies. In light of this and the recent spike in the number of Film Projects currently underway in the LA area, it is my sincere hope and desire to help in the process of having a Major Film Production Center with Sound Stages built in the Palmdale area.

In 1999, with “runaway productions” draining Film Jobs from LA, I got my Real Estate License and first worked for Troth Realtors, representing Buyers & Sellers of Residential & Land. I was soon a Top Producer and became adept at Writing Contracts. This “side job” afforded me the ability to continue my work as an Art Director, mostly building Sets on commercials. Over the years I have worked with other Brokers; and currently I am working with Essence Real Estate Consultants in Palmdale. I am still a Licensed Sales Agent.

In December of 1979 I heard about a Sci-Fi film being shot in the old Hammond Lumber facility in Venice. I took some sketches there and was hired on the spot (Dec. 31st, 1979). This was my very first Film Job: working for New World Pictures (Roger Corman) on "Battle Beyond the Stars." Being an Illustrator and Carpenter, I ended up as an Assistant Art Director under (the then unknown) Jim Cameron. Regrettably, as I was still under contract to Arco and had extensive obligations to Bayer, I was unable to stay or complete the film and didn’t work with Cameron again until The Abyss (1986). The Crew included numerous people who went on to get Oscars for their work. Among those stellar Crew members were: Uber-Producer Gale Ann Hurd, Alec Gillis, Robert & Dennis Skotak (all Oscar-winning FX Artists), Aaron Lipstadt, Alan Howarth and the late, great Oscar-winning Composer, James Horner, who was a friend.Throughout the 1980’s and until 2004, I was an Art Dept “Gun-for-Hire” with a reputation for being able to Design & Build Sets quickly and under budget. With Blockbuster Video stores opening all over, I was in high demand by companies creating “straight-to-tape” Films that were pre-sold at the AFM (American Film Market). After tiring of the rapid-fire pace of these forgettable films, I started doing more & more TV commercials, as the pace was more relaxed, the pay & budgets far better and more importantly, I could actually have a life outside of the frenetic overlapping and breakneck schedules that were the Hallmark of the straight to tape productions. To this day, I am still an Art Director, working as an Independent Contractor and Consultant to productions of all sizes.

Playa Vista, Ca

These enormous buildings built by Howard Hughes for the production of airplanes during WW2 (as well as the iconic "Spruce Goose") have been converted into some of the largest Film Stages in California. Due to their immense size and close proximity to the major Studios; the Stages at Playa Vista have hosted some of the largest Film Productions ever shot in the LA area in recent history. Avatar; Transformers; Iron Man; XXX-State of the Union; Van Helsing; etc.

Between 1973 & 1980, I worked for Arco in their PR Department as a Photographer & Copywriter; and eventually reported directly to Herbert Bayer, a world renowned Artist, Designer, Painter & Architect… and at the time, the last living member of the Bauhaus School of Design. It was Arco’s Founder & CEO, Robert O. Anderson’s long friendship with Bayer that resulted in Anderson becoming an avid Contemporary Art Collector, and thus Arco buildings throughout the US were soon filled with excellent examples of major Contemporary Artworks. Under Bayer’s tutelage, I was soon building a slide library of the Arco Collection and we developed one of the very first computer inventory systems for an Art Collection, which as Anderson continued to buy at a feverish pace, grew to well over 30,000 pieces nationwide. Before long I was traveling all over the US, photographing Arco's collection and speaking to groups of visitors and dignitaries about the key artworks in the company's Executive floors.
