About David Heesom Fciat

Fellow Member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (MCIAT)Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)Member of the Institute of Knowledge Transfer (MInstKT)David holds a BEng (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering from Loughborough University and an MSc (distinction) in CAD in Construction from the University of Wolverhampton. He completed his PhD at the University of Wolverhampton in 2004, which developed a suite of software tools to allow more effective planning on construction sites by utilising ‘4D’ BIM techniques.Whilst with Atkins I worked on various projects including a large infrastructure project in Dublin, Ireland & became a 3D computer-modelling engineer for a large project in the North of England. I initially joined the University as a Research Fellow undertaking a collaborative EPSRC funded project entitled ‘The Virtual Construction Site’ with University College London, UMIST and Teesside University. Since then I have undertaken various teaching and research roles in the area of Building Information Modelling, CAD / ICT for construction, architectural visualisation and virtual reality and remain actively involved with research and development within the School, publishing widely in the field of visual simulation for the construction industry. I have been responsible for delivering over £2m worth of R&D projects with the construction industry and successfully operated several Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) with each of these achieving at least a Grade B following independent assessment. The most recently completed KTP with the Severn Partnership was awarded an 'A-Grade (Outstanding) by an independent review. I have presented work at various international events including Germany, Eire, Canada, China and the USA. David’s recent and current research in the area of BIM is well recognised and he is currently giving a range of seminars throughout the UK for various bodies on the impact of BIM on the construction industry.
