Research in the Herbert group focuses on the design and synthesis of molecular and macromolecular compounds for use in energy and environmental applications such as artificial photosynthesis (the reduction and functionalization of carbon dioxide) and water remediation. Taking our inspiration from Nature, we design catalysts that exploit cooperative reactivity between ligands and metals, or between multiple metal centres, to facilitate challenging multi-electron transformations using earth-abundant elements.Members of the Herbert group will develop expertise in air/moisture sensitive manipulations using glove-box and Schlenk techniques as well as aqueous organometallic chemistry, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-Ray diffraction, electrochemistry and a host of other characterization techniques.
