In 1985, I learned to hang and finish drywall and eventually became a drywall subcontractor. Subcontracting taught me customer service, accountability, and the discipline required to work for oneself. After the recession of 2008 collapsed the housing market, I landed at Turano Bread, West in Villa Rica, Georgia. Depending upon product demand, we worked 40-hour or 72-hour work weeks. Turano taught me to how to adapt to a flexible schedule and how to adapt to working evenings. In 2011, after my widowed mother moved in with me, I could no longer maintain the rigors of a 72-hour work week and adequately care for my mother. We decided that furthering my education would provide me the time to tend her and provide the skills necessary for a “white collar” job. I enrolled at West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) in the spring of 2014. I pursued a double major in Accounting and General Business and obtained both AAS degrees in 2018. I continued at WGTC until 2020, when I obtained my AAS degree in Business Technology. While attending WGTC, I became a member of the Carroll chapter of Phi Beta Lambda. Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) sponsors various fundraising activities to benefit the March of Dimes when its members are not otherwise occupied attending district, state, and national conferences. A variety of competitions are held at these conferences ranging in categories from cybersecurity to customer service to forensic accounting. Being a member of PBL taught me how to be comfortable in a suit and how to tie a tie. Being president of PBL taught me the importance of conflict resolution, setting a good example, and holding others accountable. In 2018, I began my internship in the Accounts Receivable Department of Southwire Company, LLC as a member of the Discrepancy Team. Our duties support the accounts receivables analysts in their efforts to keep their accounts current. I use SAP to research various items on the analysts’ accounts to resolve discrepancies between amounts invoiced and amounts paid. I also aid the Cash Applications Department in processing customer payments and assist the Tax Department in applying credit memos to unpaid sales tax debits. Currently, I am pursuing a BBA degree in Management at the University of West Georgia. Ultimately, I hope to leverage all my training and experience to find an entry-level management position. I feel my training, education, and leadership experiences in PBL (along with my experience as a drywall subcontractor) will provide me the rudimentary skills necessary to succeed in a management position.
