About David Hewson

Research qualifications: I have a PhD in Biomechanics from the University of Auckland, New Zealand (2000). My thesis was awarded the Vice-Chancellors prize for my thesis work for the best PhD in the Science department. I completed the French HDR qualification (accreditation to supervise research) from the University of Technology of Compiègne in 2006. My HDR dissertation was entitled “Detection and decisions based on biomedical signals”. Teaching: I have substantial experience in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels across many subject areas. My teaching has including lectures, tutorials, as well as the organisation of laboratory teaching programmes. The topics in which I teach include Research Methods, Public Health, Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Human Movement Analysis, Ergonomics, Statistics, Neuroprosthetics, E-Health, Project Management, and Biology for Engineers.Project Management: I have extensive experience in coordinating collaborative research projects in both France and Europe. I also taught project management to both French and international students. I have also played a leading role in setting up an Indo-French collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur.

    Professor Of Health And Ageing
University Of Bedfordshire Oct 2015 - Present
    Luton, Royaume-Uni
My research focuses on improving the life of older people, particularly those suffering from the age-related conditions of frailty and sarcopenia, stroke, and dementia. A key part of this research focus is the development of a series of interventions for older people and their caregivers in which they can be both physically and socially active. These interventions often involve golf, which is an ideal activity for older people due to the combination of physical and social elements, as well as the benefits from being outdoors. In addition to golf, I am currently developing a centre on one of the university campuses where people with dementia and their caregivers can take part in gardening. I work closely with the Bedford, Luton, and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Service, both to aid the delivery and evaluation of a range of different physical activities for frail older people. In all of these activities, there is a focus on student learning, with placement opportunities for occupational therapy and physiotherapy students. My research also includes a qualitative approach to help understand the barriers and facilitators to taking part in the interventions offered.
  • University Of Bedfordshire
    Senior Research Fellow
University Of Bedfordshire Aug 2014 - Oct 2015
    Luton, Royaume-Uni
I worked as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Clinical Education and Leadership while on a sabbatical from UTT.
  • Université De Technologie De Troyes
    Professor
Université De Technologie De Troyes Sep 2008 - Aug 2014
    Région De Troyes, France
I was the coordinator of the E-Health group of the Charles Delaunay Institute, a CNRS Laboratory (UMR ICD 6281). This group participates actively in research on physical and social frailty, with the aim of identifying changes in the capacity to live autonomously, approached from both technological and social standpoints. In respect to physical frailty, a range of different devices has been developed in order to detect frailty according to the Fried criteria using auto-administered tests. The devices include:- The BQT (Balance Quality Tester), which is a bathroom scale that functions as a force plate to evaluate balance quality and weight loss.- The Grip-Ball, which is a ball containing a pressure sensor and wireless communication that estimates grip strength.- A Doppler-based device to measure instantaneous gait velocity- A Smartphone to measure physical activity, gait velocity, and gait variability
  • Université De Technologie De Troyes
    Lecturer
Université De Technologie De Troyes Sep 2002 - Aug 2008
    Région De Troyes, France
My duties included teaching, with courses such as Biology for Engineers, Exercise Physiology, and Ergonomics. Research continued on the theme of falls in the elderly, including the development of new projects such as PréDICA (ANR), and Domo-Grip. These projects enlarged the scope of the PARAChute, which had developed an intelligent bathroom scale that could measure balance quality.
  • University Of Technology Of Troyes
    Postdoctoral Fellow
University Of Technology Of Troyes Sep 2000 - Aug 2002
    Région De Troyes, France
The position was entirely research orientated. The requirement was to create a research programme in the field of biomedical engineering and signal processing with a healthcare application. The outcome of the post-doc was a proposal to undertake research related to the use of technology to prevent falls in the elderly. The PARAChute project was submitted for funding from the French National Research Agency (ANR), with the project starting in 2003.
  • Royal New Zealand Air Force
    Physiologist
Royal New Zealand Air Force Jun 1994 - Jun 2000
    Auckland, New Zealand
I was employed as a physiologist (enlisted officer, rank of Flight Lieutenant) by the RNZAF during which time I completed my PhD from the University of Auckland. My duties included teaching, research, and management. I taught aircrew on topics including altitude physiology, the effects of acceleration on the body, spatial disorientation, night vision, and alertness management. I also managed hands-on demonstrations to aircrew of hypoxia using the altitude chamber. Research projects were designed to enhance the operational effectiveness of the RNZAF. Projects included evaluations of pilot heat stress and the strength required to control aircraft.
  • University Of Otago
    Teaching Fellow
University Of Otago Jan 1993 - Dec 1993
    Dunedin
I worked as a teaching fellow running physiology laboratories, tutorials, with responsibility for one stream of lectures. All of the courses were taught to undergraduate students.
