What does a retired Naval Aviator do in retirement? Grow wine grapes! Joanne and I established Berry Hill Vineyard in April 2000 with Cabernet Franc. Sold grapes to local wineries for 6 - 7 years. 2008 planted Petit Verdot. 2010 granted a Basic Permit by TTB to establish a bonded winery followed with winery license from Virginia ABC. Annual grape production from the 2.5 acre vineyard reached 6.5 ton. Each year we processed approx one ton into wine and sold the remaining crop. 2010 began selling Cab Franc from our tasting room, by appointment. Appeared in Virginia Wine dot org and the Virginia Wine Guide. Annual production peaked in 2012 at 85 cases, all from grapes grown on site. Wine was all processed in our facility, including fermentation. barreling, bottling, labeling and capsules. Customers appeared from all over Northern Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Many local people from Rappahannock County were regular visitors. Wines were wholesaled to local restaurants and stores through Virginia Winery Distribution Company. Winery was closed and licenses surrendered March 3, 2015. Property will go on the market in early May 2015. We are downsizing and moving to the Charlottesville VA area. What a wonderful work experience and meeting wonderful wine enthusiasts!Testimonial: An absolute gem! The wines are amazing, well crafted and unforgettable! The Cab Franc and Petit Verdot blew us away. We had high expectations after reading several reviews and to say that Berry Hill did not disappoint would be a huge understatement. It is a small, family-run winery with a cozy tasting room but the wines are big and bold. Berry Hill Vineyard and Winery is a must visit for those searching for high quality Virginia wines. We'll definately be going back. LR King George, VA.
