I am a passionate believer in the value of Lean thinking as a force for positive change in business and society. On the surface, Lean management is recognized as a powerful operating system which can drastically improve organizational performance. However, the deeper significance of Lean is that it is also a practical culture-building tool that can be used by leaders to fully engage employees and build trust within an organization.In my book, The Essence of Lean: A Superior System of Management, I describe a unique Lean teaching and adoption model which can be applied to virtually any type of organization. In the book, I use general business concepts and common language to explain how and why a Lean way of managing can produce such outstanding performance, while at the same time leading to a less stressful, more fulfilling and even joyful workplace.I recently introduced my Lean development program for team leaders, department heads, small business owners and other frontline managers who want to build a resilient Lean culture around trust and respect. In the program, participating group leaders learn and implement the "Lean way" of carrying out fundamental operating practices such as leading employees, organizing the workplace, performing everyday work, and solving everyday problems.
