David Howes is Professor of Anthropology, Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture, and Co- and Director of the Centre for Sensory Studies at Concordia University, Montreal. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Law at McGill University. David holds three degrees in anthropology and two degrees in law. His main fields of research include sensory anthropology, medical anthropology, material culture, culture and consumption, constitutional studies, legal pluralism, and the anthropology of law.David has conducted field research on the cultural life of the senses in the Massim and Middle Sepik River regions of Papua New Guinea, Northwestern Argentina, and the Southwestern United States. Recent projects include an anthropological study of the sensory life of things in the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford; an ethnographic study of current trends in sensory marketing in the United States and Canada; and “Mediations of Sensation” - a joint project with Chris Salter that combines sensory anthropology and new media art in the creation of sensorially-compelling immersive environments such as “Displace” and “Atmosphere.”David’s research in law has included a comparative study of the constitution and cultural expression in the United States and Canada for the “Canadian Icon” project; and a cultural history of the civil law of Quebec through the lens of the life and work of some of that province’s most illustrious jurists. As a member of the “Centaur Jurisprudence” project based in the McGill University Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism, his latest work has involved developing a model for the resolution of legal cases that have a significant cross-cultural dimension.
