Before asking, "How can we succeed?", I first ask, "What should we succeed at?" For me, the answer was clear: Let's save the world from the fossil fuel industry. This realization drove me from Switzerland to Taiwan. Germany was a tempting option, but I knew I needed to push myself to master English—and, as a bonus, I picked up Chinese along the way.In Taipei, I worked as a biochemist in a forefront lab. Biology’s complexity pushed us to rely on trial and error, but I felt it was too slow. Hoping to speed things up, I started a bioinformatics PhD, yet the challenges persisted. After 3 years of grappling with Python to improve bacterial model predictions, I told my boss that the problem wasn't the algorithms—it was big data! The data to improve the models existed, but gathering and structuring it was far too slow. So think about it—if I had this problem, didn't everyone else too? Wouldn't it be far more important to succeed at harnessing big data than just solving the downstream problem of producing chemicals? You can guess the answer. So, I used my solid foundation in natural sciences to start learning AI even before chatGPT made its debut. AI is the way to go.

Research AssistantAcademia Sinica, Taiwan Sep 2019 - Aug 2020Nangang District, Taipei City, TaiwanThis one-year position was in the lab of Prof. James C. Liao (廖俊智), who first gained recognition for his groundbreaking study on astaxanthin production in Escherichia coli in 1998, demonstrating an early biochemical synthesis process for colorants that is now widely adopted in industry. He has received numerous awards for his innovative work, including the White House "Champion of Change" for innovations in renewable energy in 2012.I joined the lab to study metabolic engineering for the biotechnological use of bacteria and to contribute to a circular economy. My work focused on two main areas:Cell-Free CO2 Fixation Systems: I helped develop reaction systems using protein mixtures in a one-pot reaction. This approach was innovative as it explored multi-enzymatic pathways involving over 15 enzymes, facing the challenge of poor protein stability in vitro. Our results showed that we achieved a CO2 fixation rate faster than that in plants. As part of the project, I purified proteins, assayed enzyme stabilities, analyzed GC-MS measurements, and tested electrode-mediated NADH reduction. We also explored fluorescent ATP sensors and the use of polyphosphate kinase for ATP replenishment, although this did not make it into the final publication.Genetic Engineering in E. coli: I engineered gene-metabolic circuits and performed adaptive laboratory evolution to enhance the production of feedstock chemicals, exploring new evolution strategies and improving previously engineered strains for industrial applications. -
