I believe nonprofits have a bigger impact when their staff and volunteers have more time for work that truly matters. To do that, I look for work processes that are slow, repetitive, and waste human talent. Then I implement technologies that give people their time back and unleash new energy in the organization. My consulting career started at Vanderbilt University, where I worked with a program that gave talented kids unique educational experiences. I worked with very smart and skilled people, yet so much of our time was spent entering data from applications and paperwork. I asked my boss why we didn't have an online system. She told me they looked into it, but it was going to cost them $50,000 for the first year, and tens of thousands of dollars per year after that. I asked for permission to take another look Within a few weeks, we had a system up and running for practically nothing. We already had the tools we needed, but nobody had seen how to put them together before. With that one change, we saved hundreds of hours a year. With more time to develop programs, quality improved, participation shot up, and we pursued new opportunities for growth and outreach.I continued to improve our technologies over the years that followed. I developed low-code apps to improve logistics and deployed existing market solutions to improve communication and staff coordination. By the end of my time at Vanderbilt, I was liaising with IT on a campus-wide system based on some of the tools I had built.I became an independent consultant in 2020 because I wanted to use my skills to help more organizations. I have built a business enabling small to medium sized nonprofits to do more good by using technology in a smater way. I focus on understanding what is unique about each nonprofit and which tools will unleash the most power in the shortest amount of time.I find meaning in service, especially for nonprofits involved in social justice. I am honored to have helped my amazing clients work better. And I look forward to what the future holds.
