I currently manage and have worked in a range of programs spanning individual appliance work to whole building applications across emerging technologies up to State and Federal standards for proven technologies. Some of these programs include:Automated Demand Response (ADR) refers to the temporary shifting of building load in order to maintain a more stable grid. Within this program I am the technical lead. Overseeing the technical work of the entire implementation team while also interacting directly with customers, trade allies, and clients. This involves, but not limited to, developing load shed strategies for HVAC, lighting and/or pumping for varying customers, calculating available load while having a manageable impact on the customer, navigate the administrative requirements of acquiring incentives for customers to install eligible equipment to ease the burden of ADR participation.I also manage multiple ongoing federal and State energy efficiency rule making procedures for the California IOUs (PG&E, SDG&E, SCE, & SoCalGas). My areas of expertise center around white good appliances such as clothes washers, clothes dryers, dishwashers, cooking products, refrigerators, air purifiers, portable air conditioners, and room air conditioners. All of these products are considered in the vein of test procedures, energy efficiency, and load management capabilities. This involves novel test plan development and investigation, development of comments on energy efficiency proposals by DOE, participation in negotiations with industry advocates & DoE consultants, analysis and development of claimed savings, feasibility of proposed standards, and organization/development of public comments for the four California IOUs. At the State level, my expertise is focused on the California Title 24 building and Title 20 appliance standards where I have used my subject matter expertise to advise on grid flexibility standards.

Engineers play a vital role in sustainability. Designers and manufacturers have unique control over sustainability by having a direct impact and control in the amount of resources (e.g., electricity, water, and materials) consumed throughout a products lifetime. To continue to make products and their manufacturing as sustainable as possible we are using a combination of big data, applicable sustainability metrics and manufacturing taxonomy to incorporate real-time diagnostic and prognostic improvements of dynamic manufacturing. We must consider what inputs and outputs are the top priorities, why these are the priorities and what metrics must be modified to achieve the best balance of inputs and outputs. With these tools we will have the ability to increase the efficiency and sustainability of the engineering process; from design to manufacturing. This view on engineering led me to conduct machining test in conjunction with NIST where I would develop a varied tool path and monitor the energy & power used across different cutting methods (e.g., cross cutting, climb cutting), materials, cutting speeds, and cutting depths. Using the gathered information from these tests, and understanding how these variables can be used to generate the same results, and defined performance metrics, I was able to define a system where a smart manufacturing tool would be able to make adjustments to the cutting speed and/or depth of cut in order to achieve the most energy efficient result. All while considering the allotted time and the impact this may have on a production line.
Mechanical Engineer
I worked in the secure pump pay division of VeriFone where I specialized in creating and designing retrofit kits to install point of sale terminals into gas pumps. This work involved moving a product throughout the entire design to installation phase: designing, testing, prototyping, design reviews, aligning with a manufacturing for mass production, packaging, installation manuals, UL qualifications, and documentation. This hands on experience of moving multiple designs throughout this entire process has given me a unique skill set to handle all engineering aspects of a product. This work ameliorated my technical, collaborative and organizational skills. On a daily basis I interacted with a team of mechanical and electrical engineers to create the best designs possible for our customers. We used one another very effectively to work through design and testing issues to optimize our products. The work involved daily use of machine shop tools (e.g. drill press, dremels, and grinders), SolidWorks, and Oracle documentation tool Agile. My alternative duties involved the documentation and integration of a recently purchased company into the VeriFone system, creating novel in-house testing for IP rating water tests, cyclical stress tests, and stress fracture tests.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
As an intern I aided in the research of a PhD students research. My work focused of incorporating sustainability metrics into plant manufacturing, more specifically petroleum refineries, by use of the AutoCAD Plant 3D software.I performed research into determining the intensity of energy, water and waste throughout a petroleum refinery and at each refining step. This information is being used to improve the AutoCAD Plant 3D software with respect to sustainable manufacturing.
