Senior Scientist
David was employed as a senior scientist at the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (SOC) Ltd where the focus of his research was the development of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals, as well as researching novel ways of improving on existing methods and technologies. These included the radiolabeling and evaluation of biologically active molecules and other tumour-specific molecules/vectors for diagnostic and therapeutic use; e.g. monoclonal antibodies for radioimmunotherapy, and bishposphonates for palliation of painful bone metastases. The core of his responsibilities included the establishment of technologies at Necsa that aim at addressing key/significant diseases such as cancer, particularly focusing on the application of novel radiotherapeutics and/or the incorporation of therapies already introduced in the developed or first-world countries. In so doing, David coordinated and facilitated research with local and international collaborators at Necsa, towards achieving the transfer of relevant technologies. An example of this being the scientific exchange visits between the Centre of Isotopes (CENTIS) in Havana, Cuba and Necsa during 2012/2013 where expertise in the radiolabeling of monoclonal antibodies were shared. The uniqueness of such technologies in the field of nuclear and radiochemistry also presents new avenues for development in South Africa.
