David Jenney began his publishing career in 1982 as a design intern for Northland Publishing in Flagstaff Arizona. He held positions of increasing responsibility—designer, art director, production coordinator, associate publisher—and was promoted to president and publisher of the company in 1993. In 2000, when Northland (and it’s parent company Justin Industries) was sold to Berkshire Hathaway, he was allowed to find new buyers, and was offered an ownership position. The company was sold to Cooper Square Publishing in August of 2007. Northland (est. 1959) was recognized as an award-winning book publisher, known for its finely crafted books on the Southwest region. In addition to the adult titles, the company published a very successful line of children’s books under the Rising Moon and Luna Rising (bilingual books) imprints. Rising Moon’s picture books were regularly reviewed in the national media, and were selected for Arizona Governor Napolitano’s First book program three times. The Luna Rising (bilingual) imprint won two Pura Belpré Honor Awards from the American Library Association. Mr. Jenney is credited with establishing a very profitable subsidiary rights program for the children’s list.During his 13-year tenure as publisher, annual sales more than tripled, and Northland was named to the Publishers Weekly list of fastest growing small publishers. In addition to management responsibilities, he was very active in the creative side of the business. Mr. Jenney’s publishing career spans 25 years, he has served on the board of directors for Publishers Association of the West, and the Arizona Center for the Book.Specialties: A more accurate description of his position would be Publisher/Creative Director. His design credits include two Benjamin Franklin Awards from Publishers Marketing Association, two Wrangler Awards from National Cowboy Hall of Fame, and awards of excellence from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, PubWest, and Bookbuilders West.
