I spent a successful work experience in June 2017 at MACE (Manchester University School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (specifically working within civil engineering). During this time I assisted writing an introductory hand-out for the first-year fieldwork based around Patterdale, Lake District. I also assisted in using a theodolite in the field to locate the individual points used by first year students to measure using theodolites. As far as I am aware, this hand-out was used in consecutive years until the first-year fieldwork project undertaken was changed, such was the usefulness of this piece and the coherence of how it was written. Later, in 2019, I again assisted MACE in measuring an embankment in Heaton Park, collecting an important set of data to see if ground deformation was occurring due to the creating of a small, man-made lake using a dam.During A Masters degree in Earth Sciences at University of Bristol, I have become accustomed to using GIS software and creating my own maps overlaid with relevant data. I have also become accustomed to data analysis, both in a lab setting (including during socially distanced measures) and computational/numerical analysis using both MS Excel and MATLAB. Using MATLAB has also given me a fundamental understanding of coding.Thanks to a course based around an environmental impact assessment (EIA) I have gained the ability to deal with environmental issues from a social, economic, and physical environment standpoint. This task also gave me an introduction into considering the legality of conservation, land-use laws and construction policies. The task required imaginative problem-solving and to consider multiple aspects of the environment, then present my views in coherent and condensed written reports that favoured the use of maps and well-designed graphics. I scored a high First of 78% and it was one the pieces of work I was most proud of and most enjoyed creating.
