Profile bio

About David Katz

I am a mixed depositional systems geologist with broad interest and eleven years of industry experience with Chevron and Whiting Oil and Gas ranging from exploration focused studies on Jurassic Middle East reservoirs to development focused studies on Paleozoic reservoirs of the Pricaspian Basin, Kazakhstan, and North American unconventional reservoirs like the Bakken, Three Forks, Niobrara, Permian Basin, and Michigan Basin. Most of my MSc and PhD background with US onshore carbonate reservoirs derives from diagenesis and geochemistry and the integration of that subject matter with chronostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy for reduced uncertainty of subsurface and outcrop datasets. I also have experience building the static model frameworks for reservoir models via integrated methods including sequence stratigraphy, chronostratigraphy (magnetostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, trace element stratigraphy, stable isotope stratigraphy), seismic interpretation, core description, well log interpretation, and application of numerous outcrop analogs. The overall focus of my work is to integrate multiple disciplines that ultimately improve decision making skills.

Listed skills include Geology, Sequence Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Seismology, and 5 others.

Integration of Petrophysical Rock Typing with Predictive Diagenesis and Sequence Stratigraphy Tengiz Field, Precaspian Basin, Kazakhstan, 2010-Present• Improved capabilities of distributing petrophysical properties in reservoir models using carbonate diagenesis o Diagenesis is strongly linked to the expression of petrophysical properties in logs, which in turn is linked to diagenetic processes with associated spatial and temporal trends. This is ongoing research with the goal of improving petrophysical property distribution using Chevron’s Multiple Point Statistical tools and rule based diagenetic knowledge Example: case study linking early meteoric diagenesis of carbonate platform environments to the distribution of reservoir properties. We used the diagenesis modeling software, Carb 3D+ to reproduce the porosity logs from central platform wells via early meteoric diagenesis. Predictions of meteoric diagenesis and associated porosity trends away from these wells will be applied as predictive diagenetic rules in future Multiple Point Statistical Models• Petrophysical Modeling of Carbonate Diagenesis and Evolution of Complex Pore Networkso Pore Architecture Models (PAMs) were created and document the evolution of petrophysical properties (porosity and permeability) according to the diagenetic paragenesis of carbonate rocks (petrographic and geochemical analysis), from deposition to final product, to better understand the impact of evolving diagenesis on petrophysical properties. These properties are ultimately linked with spatial and temporal trends associated with environments of diagenesis. Rules extracted from these observations will be used during the reservoir modeling stage to more accurately distribute pore types with associated diagenetic flags and properties in the model

Senior Carbonate Stratigrapher

San Francisco Bay Area

Geohazard Mitigation of Early Water ProductionDeveloping Tools for Carbonate Assets, 2012-Present• Application of isotope tracers to identify water migration pathways and sourceso Forecasting field performance is critical to facility design and hazard preparedness. However, field performance and forecasting is not a perfect art and creative techniques to mitigate hazards are required. We used paired analysis of Neodymium and Strontium isotopes as tracers to type the origin of waters produced from carbonate fields. This data will be used to design strategies that will ultimately be used to abate early water production and scale formation

Senior Carbonate Stratigrapher, Research And Development Team

San Francisco Bay Area

Integrated Diagenetic and Sequence Stratigraphic Characterization of Carbonate Basin, Slope, and Platform EnvironmentsTengiz Field, Precaspian Basin Kazakhstan, 2011-Present• Reservoir property distribution is controlled by two fundamental factors, diagenesis and the original depositional framework; this work is focused on developing workflows and characterization guidelines for acquisition of datasets used in petrophysical rock typing and reservoir modelingo Data integration is derived from petrography, cores, well logs, seismic, FMI, and dynamic data

Dec 2006 - Oct 2013

Senior Carbonate Stratigrapher

San Francisco Bay Area

Integrated Chronostratigraphic Methods for Reservoir Modeling and Sequence Stratigraphic Applications Canning Basin, Lennard Shelf, Western Australia and Tengiz Field, Precaspian Basin, Kazakhstan, 2010-Present• Integration of biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, and chemostratigraphy including stable isotope and trace element stratigraphy based on the simple concept that integrated correlation constraints of all tools will ultimately lead to improved and more confident reservoir correlationso Developed on the Canning Basin outcrops- resulted in the first Fammenian age correlations linking platform-to-slope and basin depositional environmentso Applied to Chevron’s Tengiz field (in progress) and already identified fundamental changes to sequence stratigraphic correlations that were not identified by standard subsurface tools, i.e. well logs, seismic, core

Dec 2006 - Oct 2013

Senior Carbonate Stratigrapher, Research And Development Team

San Francisco Bay Area

Primary Mentor and PhD Committee Member for Two Chevron InternsIntern Projects focused on Integrated Chronostratigraphy and Diagenesis, 2012-Present• Development of stable carbon isotopes as chronostratigraphic tools to outcrops of the Lennard Shelf, Canning Basin, Western Australia. This tool enabled the first ever correlations through Fammenian age slope and basin depositional environments• Identification and characterization of early and late diagenetic products from platform –to-slope and basin depositional environments, Tengiz Field, Kazakhstan. This work was used to extract rules and constraints for diagenetic process modeling• Computer based process modeling of meteoric diagenetic products, Tengiz Field, Kazakhstan. We used the software Carb 3D+ to model the spatial and temporal patterns of early diagenesis and its overprint on the primary sequence stratigraphic architecture. The diagenetic models accurately reproduce well log porosities throughout the field and this technology will be used to improve the distribution of reservoir properties away from wells in the reservoir model.
