For the last 12 years I have been running my own company from home, providing IT support to home users and small businesses in the local area. This has included: Training, troubleshooting problems, repairing systems and setting up new offices with systems.

After joining Salex as IT Manager, reporting directly to the deputy chairman, I formed a coherent IT strategy encompassing the AS400 range of computers, PC hardware and software and the CAD/CAM system. Using this strategy I provided systems to improve and automate all aspects of the business, over several manufacturing sites and offices.I was part of a small project team of four, to control all aspects of the implementation of MRP II using Computer Associates Data 3 software. This included the initial selection of a suitable package, after evaluating all the market leading software, company wide education, presentations to all levels in the company, training users both in the software and in MRP II principles and training managers and directors in MRP II concepts. During this time I attended all the Oliver Wright MRP courses and gained a thorough understanding of the principles of MRP II. I also documented and modified the RPG programs where enhancements were needed. The project team was also responsible for designing the post cut over structure of the company and changing functions within the company where necessary to keep within the bounds of the software and also the MRP II philosophy. Part of this education was overcoming the "us and them" attitude to the IT department which was a legacy from previous managers. I also implemented various Lotus Notes based applications to help one of our sites comply with ISO9000/2000 and QS9000 quality audits and planed the migration of the AS400 MRP system to three separate PC based systems to better suit the diverse needs of the group

Business: Manufacturing and assembly of road laying equipment. Reason for leaving: Company in Receivership. In May 1985, I joined Barber Greene as the IT Manager. I was responsible directly to the MD and had control of all aspects of computing within the company. This included upgrading the system, moving to a new site and a review and documentation of all existing systems. I also developed a strategy for using PC equipment where necessary and gained an in depth knowledge of all PC related subjects. At all times I was responsible for the day to day running of the department, controlling budgets and for recruiting staff Towards the end of my employment with the company I was also responsible for selecting and implementing a MRP II system to replace the existing systems.

Within Three months of joining IR as a trainee operator on a IBM System 3, I was promoted to chief operator in charge of three people. I taught myself the basics of RPGII programming and was given external training. I moved into the programming section and began programming work on a variety of manufacturing systems. I helped in the installation of an IBM System 38 and the conversion of all the existing systems onto the new machine. By the time I left I had been promoted to assistant IT Manager responsible for a department of seven. In my time at IR I gained a thorough understanding of the requirements of a manufacturing company and the techniques of analyst programming work.
