Research Assistant

During the summer of 2018, I acquired a research position in the Physics Department on the University of Minnesota campus for the NOvA (NuMI Off-axis ve Appearance) Experiment taking place at FermiLab in Chicago, which fires a beam of neutrinos to a far detector in Ash River, MN. Working in conjunction with grad students, professors, and a few other physics undergrads, I had a lot of catching up to do in an area I had little knowledge about. In the span of two weeks I was educated in the area of High Energy Particle physics to the point I was prepared to pursue my first project. My assignment was minimizing the resonance systematic error on the current Monte Carlo data extrapolation by binning the Far Detector/Near Detector Interaction ratio in terms of a variable called Q Squared, which is as a magnitude of a momentum vector within an interaction. After writing scripts using the NOvaSOFT software package along with ROOT (a C++ based data analysis package), the results gave promising evidence toward my research improving NOvA’s prediction by reducing the error by 50 percent. After presenting my findings to the NOvA spokespersons and 20+ other researchers, I was instructed to further my research and find the optimal binning for the variable to determine if it was possible to further improve the prediction. Despite possessing no formal background in high energy particle physics, I believe I demonstrated how quickly I can adapt and learn new concepts in a very small amount of time. Through this position I gained valuable knowledge in making interpersonal connections and persisting through technical challenges to get the desired end product.
