Director Of Information Technology
Syracuse, New York, United States
Syracuse Language Systems was a software development company that grew out of the Linguistics Department at Syracuse University. I joined the company soon after I graduated college and quickly grew into the IT Director role at the start-up venture. The company made interactive language learning software utilizing what were then new technologies available to consumers for the first time through fully multimedia computers. The products utilized a story driven learning approach that made use of graphics and videos created by the in-house art department and custom music and audio recorded on-site by the in-house audio department. Before the company was acquired by Vivendi Universal, they had even begun online language instruction via their Language Connect University offering. While common place today, Syracuse Language Systems was quite innovative for its time. Syracuse Language Systems presented many Information Technology challenges, especially for a young, inexperienced recent graduate. A server and network infrastructure needed to be designed, built and maintained that met the needs of the Art, Audio, Speech Recognition and Online departments at a time when the needs of such departments in the online digital era had yet to be defined. The hands on experience gained constructing and supporting all aspects of the company's IT services from the desktop to the backbone as well as managing a staff for the first time has proven to be an invaluable foundation for later efforts.
