As a law clerk for the Disciplinary Counsel for the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation ("LLR"), I worked for 11 attorneys and aided each attorney as he/she worked with the professional licensing boards and the South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration ("OSHA") to determine if State or Federal statutes or regulations have been violated which constitute violations which could result in fines or the removal or suspension of professional licenses to work and/or conduct business within the State of South Carolina. In my work as a law clerk, my duties and responsibilities included, but we're not limited to:-Attended depositions and hearings in relation to Board and OSHA violations;-Reviewed investigation notes, complaints from the public, and investigation reports to determine the extent and nature of licensing and OSHA violations;-Conducting legal research to determine the extent and nature of violations and the actions that council may take by law in relation to licensed and unlicensed offenders;-Drafted and edited briefs, notices of penalties and hearings, and other legal documents as need; and-Performed other general and legal clerical tasks, such as filing documents with courts and creating reference charts for statutory authority, as requested by attorneys, investigators and LLR support staff and paralegals.

As a research assistant to Professor Josh Gupta-Kagan, Assistant Professor of Law at The University of South Carolina School of Law (specializing in Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice), I aided Professor Gupta-Kagan in conducting, updating, and "blue-booking" research for a paper he was writing discussing the substantiation of child abuse allegations and the effects of substantiated claims of abuse on the accused's rights and liberties. My duties and responsibilities as a research assistant included, but we're not limited to:-Conducted research to compile a 50-state survey of the standards of proof used by each state to substantiate reports of child abuse and the standard of proof used at administration hearings to confirm substantiated reports;-Researched the legislative history of child welfare statutes to determine when changes occurred in the standards for substantiation of reports of child abuse and determined the strength and effect if the changes made; -Researched the placement of children in foster care and compared the permanency of placement of children in the care of family members with the permanency of placement when placed with non-family members; and-Created charts to organize information and data to be conveyed to statisticians and legal professionals for further studies and analyses.

As an extern in the Children's Law Externship Program, I worked with and shadowed Assistant Solicitor Margaret Bodman, Fifth Circuit Children's Justice Act Task Force Member, as she prosecuted adult offenders accused of sexual and physically abusive crimes against minors and domestic partners. As an extern my duties and responsibilities included, but we're not limited to:-Conducting legal research to determine applicable laws to cure evidentiary issues for trial and pre-trial motions to suppress; -Participating in live interviews with victims, witnesses, investigators and counselors; -Attending trial and pre-trial meetings;-Preparing trial notebooks and demonstratives for trial; and-Reviewing case files and recorded Assessment Resource Center (ARC) interviews with child victims to gather facts and information relevant to pending cases.

I work for the Academic Programs Department of the University of South Carolina Provost's Office researching jurisdictional laws, regulations, and procedures related to State Authorization to ensure that the university is authorized to conduct business and award degrees in all states through its Distance Learning Programs. I also conduct similar research to ensure that the university has authorization for the interstate recruitment of students and for the provision of internships for our students in other states. My duties also include the location and preparation of relevant documentation and applications as well as the drafting of letters of exemption and all other necessary correspondences to initiate and complete the applications for State Authorization in all states.
