David Kilpatrick Work Experience Details
  • Icon Publications Ltd
    Managing Director
Icon Publications Ltd Apr 1987 - Present
    Kelso, Scotland
Founder and MD of Icon Publications Ltd, formed in April 1987, publishers of photographic magazines, website and editorial contractors. We moved to Scotland in September 1988. My wife Shirley, co-director from the start of the company, died from cancer in July 2019.
  • Cameracraft Magazine
    Publisher And Editor
Cameracraft Magazine Apr 2014 - Present
    Kelso, Scotland
Icon Publications Ltd original owned the title Freelance Photographer from 1999 onwards, changing it in 2004 to f2 'Freelance+Digital' to reflect the high level of content dealing with digital imaging. In 2007, the title was sold to EC1 Publishing Ltd who continued it for seven years as f2 Freelance Photographer. In early 2014, we took the title back when EC1 Publishing Ltd was due to shut down. Icon then published it bi-monthly and improved the quality. From October 2015, it has incorporated Cameracraft, combining the readerships and content, with Gary Friedman as associate editor in the USA and Stephen Power in Ireland (from early 2016).
  • Cameracraft Magazine
    Publisher And Editor
    Cameracraft Magazine Jul 2012 - Sep 2015
    Kelso, Scotland
Cameracraft was a new quarterly title with traditional values. Working with our US editor Gary Friedman in LA, we published work of genuine merit alongside very readable but in-depth articles. The first edition of Cameracraft was mailed in September 2012. It ran for three years without any advertising, purely funded by subscribers, with a 12-issue hard cover binder purchased by many readers. We decided to merge this with f2 Freelance Photographer in September 2015.
  • Photoclubalpha
    Director
    Photoclubalpha Apr 2006 - Present
    Kelso, Scotland
In 2006, Sony took over the Minolta camera/photographic division. The Minolta Club of Great Britain ceased to exist, as Konica Minolta now threatened to take legal action should we continue to use 'Minolta' in its name. Moral support had, in any case, been declining since staff changes at Minolta in late 1990s and the depressing merger with Konica in 2004. We reverted the magazine name to Photoworld, and independently continued to honour the deal made in 1980 and support our readers. By August 2011, the subscriber numbers had fallen to the same level as we took over in 1980 - 800. We had decided, in advance, that when this happened we would call it a day; and did. The website photoclubalpha.com remains active, unsupported by Sony.
  • Master Photographers Association
Publisher And Editor, Master Photographer Magazine
    Master Photographers Association 1995 - Jul 2017
    Kelso, Scotland
The MPA, moving to its new HQ in Darlington, needed a revived monthly magazine and Icon agreed to provide publishing services and a staff editor. Andy Aitken was engaged as editor, succeeded by Steve Craig. Richard Kilpatrick managed the digital studio, and Boland Advertising handled ad saes. This was a full pre-press contract with all repro and final films. After 2000, ad-sales came in-house and in 2003, repro film production ceased and was replaced by ISDN file transmission. I took over all editorial functions, and the reduced demand for scanning and retyping (etc) eliminated other workload.
  • Minolta Club Of Great Britain
    Director
Minolta Club Of Great Britain Jan 1981 - Mar 2006
    Tuxford, Then Kelso
At photokina 1980, Ryoshu 'Rick' Kutani of the Minolta Camera Co, Japan, shook hands on an agreement that Shirley and I should take over and run the Minolta Club, previously operated by Japanese Cameras Ltd before Minolta set up their direct UK subsidiary. This we did, publishing the quarterly Minolta Image (previously called Photoworld) for 25 years.
  • British Institute Of Professional Photography
    Editor, The Photographer
British Institute Of Professional Photography 1990 - 1994
    Ware, Hertfordshire
Using the new technology of in-house scanning and colour separation film output acquired after our move to Scotland, Icon Publications Ltd took on the entire pre-press contract for The Photographer. During this period, working with John Henshall, we pioneered the first digital photography and were the first in the world to reproduce covers and full pages from digital files.
  • Hove-Fountain Books
    Book Package Contractor
    Hove-Fountain Books 1987 - 1992
    Hove, Sussex
Hove-Fountain, later Hove Photo Books, engaged Icon Publications Ltd for the complete outsourcing of a large A5 range of photo titles and the translation, revision and redesign of Magic Lantern camera manuals. This ceased when the imprint was purchased by Newpro UK, and no further budgets were available to pay independent authors or photographers, and the overall design/typography/reproduction was no longer an important value to the new publishers.
  • Master Photographers Association
    Editor Of 'Master Photographer'
Master Photographers Association Jul 1984 - Dec 1988
    West Ruislip, Middlesex
I took MPA's magazine from bi-monthly to monthly and increased its colour content, redesigning it in 1986 using the new PageMaker program on Macintosh. In 1987, it was a joint winner for Icon Publications Ltd of the first PIRA Desktop Publishing Awards.
  • A1 Studios
    Owner And Partner
    A1 Studios 1980 - 1988
    Tuxford, Nottinghamshire
A1 Studios was a partnership (David and Shirley Kilpatrick) offering comprehensive photographic, design, authoring, database management and the first DTP magazine production service in the UK
  • Ilford Imaging
    Editor, Ilford Photo
    Ilford Imaging 1985 - 1986
    London, United Kingdom
ILFORD was a company in constant change but for one brief period I was able to create an almost-perfect company magazine in three languages (English, French and German) with typographical direction from Adrian Davies ensuring I worked within their corporate image stylebook. Ilford Photo was, jointly with Master Photography, voted as the Best Magazine or Newspaper for the 1987 PIRA Awards and was the first commercial title of its kind to be produced using DTP.
  • Fivefour Photography
    Owner
    Fivefour Photography 1983 - 1984
    Nottingham
FiveFour was a satellite studio of A1 Studioes, and was managed by Richard Bradbury, who later became a very successful London advertising photographer - and still is
  • Eaglemoss Publishing Group
Consultant Editor, You And Your Camera
    Eaglemoss Publishing Group 1978 - 1984
    London
It's hard to pin down the exact dates of this position, as the monthly partwork was only part of it and my writing and photography (including physical colour layouts) continued into the 1980s for book spin-offs.
  • Carlton Communications Ltd
    Editor Of Creative Photography Magazine
    Carlton Communications Ltd 1981 - 1982
    London, United Kingdom
David and Michael Green, later to head Carlton Television and already very successful in catalogue photography and print, bought the rights from Photographie Verlag Schauffhausen to base a new English-language monthly photo magazine on the Swiss (German language) 'Photographie'. I was the first editor and added UK content to selected material translated mostly by Andreas Vogt, who joined A1 Studios as a staff photographer during this period. After 13 issues and a disastrous £34,000 advertising campaign on Capital Radio (against my advice) the Greens sold the title to EMAP.
  • South Yorkshire County Council
Pr, Photography, Av And Design Contracts
South Yorkshire County Council Jun 1975 - Sep 1980
    Barnsley
The day I resigned from Sheffield Newspapers Ltd I had a call from a former colleague, Keith Bishop, who was freelancing for SYCC. He introduced me to their PR department and I was able to replace my lost earnings. I produced their environmental magazine Contact!, many brochures and leaflets, and the audio-visual presentation for the Draft Structure Plan. We moved from South Yorkshire to Nottinghamshire in 1980.
  • Lister Kilpatrick Associates
    Partner
    Lister Kilpatrick Associates 1979 - 1980
    Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
Photography, audiovisual, film, exhibitions, catalogues, print production, photo lab services, 3D imaging, technical services to the photo industry
  • Sheffield And Hallamshire Topic
    Editor
    Sheffield And Hallamshire Topic 1977 - 1978
    Sheffield, United Kingdom
I am unsure of the dates, but for roughly one year I edited a new Sheffield Topic title for John Ball Publications of Nottingham, during which time it expanded ending with the appointment of a full-time staff editor
  • Insitute Of Incorporated Photographers
    Editor Of The Photographer Magazine
    Insitute Of Incorporated Photographers 1976 - 1977
    Ware, Hertfordshire
I edited thirteen issues of The Photographer, as a freelance engaged by Penblade Publications Ltd
  • Photo Technique Magazine
    Associate Editor
    Photo Technique Magazine 1974 - 1977
    London, United Kingdom
Working as a freelance for editor Jack Schofield, I produced the news section and equipment tests as well as other features for the most modern and stylish photo magazine of 1970s Britain. I was contracted to provide ten pages a month minimum, and to assist Jack in the final two-day production phase working at Garnett Print in Rotherham.
  • Sheffield Newspapers Limited
    Sub-Editor
Sheffield Newspapers Limited Oct 1973 - May 1975
Bylined feature writing, editing, page design and content generation for an evening newspaper. I resigned from the newspaper when internal politics succeeded in getting me transferred to the news subs desk, which would have ended my writing, design, working with photographers and the generally high profile I had within the paper.
  • Sheffield Newspapers Limited
    Trainee Journalist
Sheffield Newspapers Limited Oct 1970 - Sep 1973
    Sheffield, United Kingdom
On leaving school with 'AAB' A-levels, I was offered a place to read English at King's College, London. I was also offered a funded single year pre-entry Journalism course at Richmond College, Sheffield, if I agreed to join The Star as a trainee. At that time there were no degree courses in Journalism at what became Sheffield Hallam University, and I had not applied for the Cardiff Uni (only!) degree course then existing. I decided to go down the vocational rather than academic route, as everyone agreed I was certainly not 'academic' in temperament and I was already writing for the specialist photo press. Why not a trainee photographer? I had asked for this option and was told that photographers never enter the management career ladder, but journalists occasionally do; since I was future management material, I had to train as a journalist.
  • Fountain Press Ltd
    Technical Editor Of 'Photography' Magazine
    Fountain Press Ltd 1972 - 1974
    Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom
John Sanders was an innovative editor, ex advertising agency, engaged by Harry Ricketts to modernised the monthly 'Photography' title. For John I produced camera tests and technique features, as their freelance Technical Editor.
