Most of my sixteen years in the commercial real estate industry have been spent in increasingly responsible roles at VEREIT, where I worked as an integral part of a team that assembled a multi-billion-dollar commercial real estate portfolio that includes office, industrial and retail assets. This diverse and robust portfolio withstood the great recession, expanded when everyone else was struggling, and has since thrived in the recovery. Commercial real estate investments are extraordinarily complex by nature. There are zoning requirements, title reviews, building codes, entitlements, construction costs, tenant improvements, legal contracts, REA obligations, leases, repairs, maintenance, capital improvements, market conditions, environmental laws, and capital markets that all need to be evaluated to maintain proper risk control for every deal. Underwriting institutional-level acquisitions in a high-volume environment like VEREIT has given me a breadth of investment experience measured in hundreds of individual deals worth billions of dollars. It has also allowed me to develop the quantitative and qualitative skills needed manage the many aspects of each investment in order to create and preserve value for our investors. As a naturally curious person, I constantly pursue additional industry knowledge through active participation in the local chapters of ULI and NAIOP. Not only has my involvement in these organizations given me a deep understanding of my home market of Phoenix (definitely one of the most dynamic in the U.S. right now), but also has let me develop a network of talented industry peers who also share my passion for commercial real estate investment.
