Production And Inventory Control Manager
Kadant Solutions is a job shop manufacturing business focused on products for the paper making industry. The Auburn site produces Doctoring, Forming, Filtration ad Cleaning Systems. Providing customers engineered solutions to improve and extend the paper making processes. The manager I was reporting to received a promotion to the corporate office and created this role to work Closely with the new Supply Chain Manager. He and I focused on improving our inventory accuracy and reducing the reserved expense for the site. I had the main task of addressing the day to day details of production scheduling and on time delivery KPI's. I was able to move the performance in this area up to 98.5% on-time delivery.Inventory accuracy reached 99.3% and the inventory reserve was slashed by over $475,000. The population for reserved items was reduced by over 1,300 items by conversion to active items, targeted selling to select customers and disposal. The reduction had a factor in improving the inventory cycle count accuracy. I lead a Kaizen event that lead to the rearrangement of the stockroom to increase storage locations, improve visibility/ergonomics. Four minutes on average were removed from the pick/replenishment times using the sweet zone for inventory and moving active items closer to the front of the stockroom.
Production Manager
The position was created to delegate the daily manufacturing operations from the Vice President. The company was in a growth spurt and I was recognized for having diverse skills in machining, capacity planning, mentoring and attention to the details the system data provided.Capacity was a major issue. Plans were created and implemented to increase capacity through additional work shifts. Staffing for skilled machinists was always a challenge. I developed skills testing to reduce the population of applicants and find the best fit for the organization. Many of those hired are still with the company today. Being a job shop environment our workers had to have skills developed to allow flexing of staff to where the work load was at the time, no one was ever bored. I'm proud to have been a major part of the team that provided the highest gross revenue quarter ever.
Manufacturing Engineer
I was between jobs and an old friend who knew of my skills brought me into the company to assist with the migration of product and equipment from a plant being consolidated into the Auburn site. With my sleeves rolled up, I worked along side the machinists at the closing plant and learned the products, processes and equipment. Transferring that knowledge into detailed written instructions that could easily be followed. Several of the employees that were brought on board at the Auburn site still refer to that information when called upon to run equipment they had not touched in months.Moving to the new site also required that the master work order routings and standards system data be migrated also into the Oracle ERP system. This was done manually over a short period of time. With all the details of the actual process and labor standards updated as required.During the move of product and equipment processes were fit into where ever there was an opening. After the dust settled I had the opportunity to lead several major Kaizen events, all lead to sizable reductions in cost and improvements in throughput.
Inventory Control And Facilities Manager
Integer Holdings Corp. was formerly known as Accellent, Inc., an Orthopedic Implant medical device contract manufacturer. I was hired after completing a Machinist test and scoring a 99%. Looking for simpler employment after selling New England Steam Turbine Corp. I began as a machinist and did not stay n that role for long. The site was in need of an inventory manager to bring leadership in that discipline to that part of the organization. The new Supply Chain Manager recognized my skills and awarded me the position. The site was migrating to a new ERP system ( Oracle) and needed a super user fro Inventory, Shipping and Receiving. At the closing once the system was released on-time I was given the recognition as being the Super Users - Super User. My diverse experience provided me a deep systems understanding.
Operations Manager -Partner
I joined the company to assist in the start-up of the business. Over the first few years the original two mechanical engineer partners and I developed at single stage steam turbine with easily produced components and overall durability. My role was as the Operations Manager, location funding, site location, equipment and staff needed to produce the engineered turbine assemblies. The company also used the staff and equipment for contract machining to maximize the use and return on the resources.Over time the strains on our personal lives became too much and agreed to sell the company.
Manufacturing Manager
Coppus Engineering was a single stage turbine manufacturing company that started around 1910. While finishing my senior year in high school a began working as a material handler on the 2nd shift. The company was in a growth period, their main customers were petroleum refineries. Never being able to sit still for long, I worked my way through the set-up and operation of many manual and CNC machine tools. Utilizing the continued education benefit I completed a two year liberal arts degree and went on for an Industrial Engineering Degree all courses taken part-time to allow me to continue with my full time job.Recognized for my personal drive I became a Manufacturing Engineer/CNC programmer. With the continued growth of the company I was selected to be the 3rd shift supervisor, since all equipment running were CNC mills and lathes. Eventually attaining the 1st shift machine shop supervisor position. During this time I went on to complete my Bachelors Degree in Business Management.Continued role growth in the organization included Stockroom Supervisor, Planning Manager and finally Manufacturing Manager. When I left the company in 1999 I was down to my last few classes in an MBA program. Many lessons learned and skills developed in the 24 years I spent with this company.
