I was hired on a short-term contract in order to design and optimize a directed screen for yeast genes involved in late-stage autophagocytosis. The protocols were to be standardized such that any undergraduate or early-stage graduate student would be able to follow them easily and begin generating meaningful data quickly.Significant achievements:- I documented the optimization of a microscopy-based method for screening mutant yeast strains for defects in late-stage autophagocytosis by inducing autophagocytosis and quantifying the number and distribution of fluorescently labeled autophagosomes over time.- I successfully trained a local volunteer undergraduate student and a visiting graduate student from Germany to carry on the screen as part of their research projects.

I was an undergraduate research student who worked in the lab after graduation. I was trained in standard biochemical and molecular biology techniques common to biology labs, such as PCR, sequencing, and cloning. I was also responsible to perform a variety of housekeeping duties including, but not limited to sterilization of research tools/materials, making medium for bacteria and fruit fly model organisms, and testing the lab for radiation levels. Significant achievements:- I helped design a method for using fruit flies as an infection model for Cystic Fibrosis bacteria. - Using this method I characterized the effects of variable expression of quorum-sensing genes on the virulence of P. aeruginosa by quantifying the mortality rate of fruit flies infected with various mutant strains.
