I recently rewrote Mathematica to take advantage of 64-bit architectures: a mix of design analysis, CPU-level hackery, months of gruntwork, and the secret of getting other people to sign on to an apparently impossible project. (Which is: You have to do all the tedious work just up to the point where it looks deceptively like the next step is trivial.) Show less
