I am currently Acting Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries at Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland. In recent years I have enjoyed roles as Associate Dean Academic, Associate Dean Curriculum and Associate Dean Teaching and Learning for the faculty overseeing academic learning in Music, Dance Studies, Fine Arts, Architecture, Planning and Design. I have a current interest in managing and leading tertiary arts and education learning and research. Over the years I have had extensive experience in a number of educational fields including primary education, secondary education and tertiary education. I have led programmes focussed on the training of both general teachers and music specialists. My research has explored theories and practices related to creativity, improvisation and exploring different perspectives of arts education. I am interested in creative and narrative approaches to research. I led a large scale research project and team that examined creative arts teacher professional development through community relationships. I am particularly interested in the role of music and the arts in contemporary society shifting from the concert or recording space to one that is more integrated in people’s lives contributing to social engagement and well being. This includes how the arts can be impactful in communities and lead to transformation and change in people’s lives. This interest has taken me to projects in teacher development, dialogic and relational pedagogies, early childhood, community arts and music technology, two published research books and numerous research articles. I have supervised over 30 postgraduate and doctoral students to completion. As a creative artist I have played piano and keyboard in contemporary music bands including covers, standards, original music and free jazz. In my early career I composed four school musicals and have conducted mass choirs and jazz bands for different educational contexts. In recent years I have been involved in university curriculum redevelopment, exploring and facilitating curriculum change and transdisciplinary teaching and learning. My main interest now lies in opportunities to facilitate and develop arts and arts education programmes, creative practice and research and enable people to build sustainable, engaging and collaborative practices and careers in the arts.
