David Lucas is a mining geotechnical specialist with more than 29 years of experience in mining and civil geotechnical engineering in Australia and Papua New Guinea, of which more than 22 years have been in mining. He is a specialist in slope stability in open-cut mining, with considerable experience in rock and soil slopes, overburden dumps and stockpiles, in a wide range of hard rock mines, coal mines and quarries. With a first degree in geology, he is able to recognise and interpret geological processes and settings in terms of their engineering impact. His technical skills range from practical assessments based on experience, to detailed stability analyses using a range of software applications. He is also skilled in written and oral communication of outcomes to audiences at a range of technical levels.His mining experience originated with 12 years in site-based operational roles where he provided practical advice on slope stability, geotechnical hazard management, and failure remediation. His consulting experience has included design applications for all stages of mining from scoping and feasibility studies, operational mines, and mine closure. He also specialises in high level geotechnical reviews for mining operations, mine designs, and geotechnical hazard management systems. David has provided expert services for a workplace safety regulator, and has appeared as an expert witness in legal proceedings. He has also lectured in geotechnical engineering at RMIT University and at the University of Melbourne, and he has written technical articles and presented at conferences on a range of his projects.David is a registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ), and is a chartered professional of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM (CP)).
