★ Data Hub ODS Framework ★Data Hub is a Hadoop-based Operational Data Store, used by enterprise customers to produce daily reports across their several operational Oracle DBs. A traditional ODS is implemented via another strong Oracle DB server; in contrast Data Hub's ODS is implemented in Hadoop. ETL from the source systems is performed by batch Oozie jobs running SQL extracts, and report queries are expressed in SQL and carried out by Impala, Tez, or Hive. Spark data ingestion is under development. I worked on the tooling framework used by customer account teams to implement a specific ODS.● Wrote design documents, conducted design reviews● Implemented command-line tools to (1) process an Excel mapping specification and emit ETL job definitions for execution in Oozie and (2) launch those jobs in parallel, respecting their dependencies● Wrote automated tests using the Spock test framework● Implemented CI using Maven, Jenkins, and Artifactory to consume Amdocs software from other teams and publish ours● Worked with technical writing team to create user documentation● Supported a user base working on Telco customer projects

Over my 15 year career with Amdocs, I built a reputation as the key player with rock-solid judgment whom everyone wants on their projects. Peers and managers know me as a versatile, pragmatic thinker: someone who understands the product from top to bottom but doesn't get lost in the weeds. Managers see me as someone who provides business value by making great technical decisions and having unfeigned concern for our users.Though I've been an individual contributor and not a manager, I've expressed leadership through consensus building and trust. Peers often ask for my technical and architectural opinions because they know I'll be friendly, respectful, and open-minded. Inevitably when we bring new developers on board or turn a project over to another team for maintenance, I'm the one who's asked to handle the mentoring and KT work.During my career, I helped design and implement the software platforms that support Amdocs's Telco products. Those platforms included the ones listed below.

Senior Software Engineer

★ Insight Business Rule Engine ★Insight is one of Amdocs's early forays out of the J2EE/Oracle world and into a data-grid/NoSQL world. The "ABLE" business rule language is a DSL targeting a business analyst user base, implemented as both an Eclipse plugin and a graphical editor. The language offers both backward-chaining and forward-chaining rules with a uniquely consistent syntax. Insight's persistence layer stores RDF graphs in HBase. We provide a basic Telco ontology with a Customer Care rule set, including machine learning via a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN). The runtime platform is the GigaSpaces in-memory data grid.● Innovated by writing a javac/Maven/ant plugin to enforce fundamental Amdocs static code analysis rules● Worked with architect and other developers to write and review design documents● Implemented ABLE rule language and editor in Java using Xtext/Eclipse● Developed Java runtime system to load domain ontology, execute forward/backward rules, persist data to HBase. Included poller for scheduled events and ability to handle incoming operations and call outgoing operations provided by backend services.● Worked on Hadoop MapReduce jobs to extract data from subset of customers● Experienced a number of NoSQL stores including Cassandra and AllegroGraph

Senior Software Engineer

★ Business Process Manager ★BPM is a workflow automation tool consisting of a graphical editor and a J2EE-hosted runtime engine with Oracle persistence. The process annotation is Amdocs-specific, but the editor can import a BPEL subset. BPM is used to describe and execute the business processes for other Amdocs products such as Ordering and Collections. ● Innovated by using the Javassist bytecode-engineering library in our ant build to add entry- and exit-logging to key API methods● Worked on C/C++ graphical editor tool for process definitions. Later migrated it to an Eclipse plugin.● Developed a Java runtime engine to execute BPM processes, targeting J2EE appservers (WLS, WAS)● Wrote individual BPM step implementations as client-triggered EJB actions and server-executed actions linked together as JMS messages● Used J2EE transactions to ensure all-or-nothing behavior for entire subprocesses of BPM steps

2002 - 2009 ~7 yrs

Software Engineer

Template Software

Template Software invented the SNAP language as a way to implement expert systems in the heyday of popularity for artificial intelligence. During my time at the company we pushed into the business space. I worked on the following projects:● Worked on the (pre-Java) bytecode interpreter, parser, and graphical editor for the SNAP language.● Implemented a JNI-based language binding to allow SNAP and Java to interoperate in the same process.● Worked in C and C++ to develop core utility libraries and GUI widgets in a GTK-like graphical toolkit that could be hosted by either X11 or Win32.● Implemented form binding to connect GUI forms with an underlying SNAP object model.● Developed a CORBA connector to allow a SNAP application to act as both a client and a server running on the Orbix and MICO Object Request Brokers.

1997 - 2002 ~5 yrs

Research Engineer

I worked as a Research Engineer in the Communications Biophysics Group at the MIT RLE, supporting the research projects of Principal Investigators there. We performed basic research into human auditory perception; we also did applied research aimed at producing an automatic Cued Speech appliance known as the Auto Cuer (something like closed captioning for deaf lip-readers). To implement the Auto Cuer, I coded a C application that performed continuous speech recognition on the audio channel of an audio/video input and overlaid the resulting English phonemes onto the video channel by drawing animated artificial hands in the shapes of Cued Speed gestures.
