I have over 40 years of award-winning domestic and international leadership experience in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Most recently, I was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the U.S. Naval Academy. I am a former practicing CPA, a strategic advisor to top government officials, and the immediate former Comptroller General of the United States. I am also a speaker and best selling author, and my latest book entitled America in 2040: Still A Superpower was published in October 2020 and updated in February 2022. I have proven experience in TRANSFORMING and TURNING AROUND large and complex governmental entities. Over my professional career, I have held leadership positions in the private, government and not-for-profit sectors—culminating in a decades-long mission to promote fiscal responsibility and accountability at all levels of government. I received Presidential appointments with unanimous Senate confirmation from Reagan, Bush (41) and Clinton, including serving as Comptroller General of the United States and CEO of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) for almost 10 years. While serving as CEO of the GAO, I led a widely praised transformation of the agency and spearheaded related efforts for the accountability community both domestically and internationally. I have served on many domestic and international boards and advisory committees in the past, including as a Public Trustee of Social Security and Medicare, and Chair of the United Nations Independent Audit Advisory Committee. I currently serve on a number of government and non-profit advisory boards, including the Defense Business Board and the Federal Fiscal Sustainability Foundation. I am also one of the national Co-Founders of No Labels.
