Based in London, David Martin is vice president and international sector leader for Health and Wellness at Stantec. He joined the company in 1997 and relocated from the US to the UK in 2000 as a design lead for healthcare, academic and medical research buildings.Focused on campus-making and fully-integrated building design, David aims to create buildings that set new standards of functional excellence while delivering a strong sense of place and identity. Developing clear conceptual frameworks for complex buildings that fuse planning, building systems and sustainability requirements with the architectural design, his projects combine exemplar healthcare, education and science environments with practical and cohesive interactive communities that engage with their surroundings.David has extensive healthcare, academic, and research design expertise, both in the UK and internationally, and his current role draws on his considerable design director experience of major university, science and healthcare projects. He led many of Stantec’s award winning facilities throughout the UK and the North America, including the National Centre for Cancer Care and Research in Doha, Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre at University of Manchester, and the Institute for Regeneration and Repair at the Edinburgh bioQuarter.David also led the Carbon Zero Lab research study, in association with Stanford University, which analysed different methods of reducing the carbon footprint of research laboratory buildings which typically have high energy consumption. The study informed the successful environmental design of research facilities and healthcare facilities, including at the University of British Columbia and Queen’s University Belfast.
