I am a Principal Optics Engineer working in precision industrial metrology at Renishaw plc. I play a senior R&D role developing optical platforms for future position encoder products, having previously designed fibre-based distributed acoustic sensors at OptaSense Ltd. Prior to moving to industry I gained in-depth training in an academic environment via a D.Phil. at the University of Oxford followed by a Marie Curie Research Fellowship at the Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse. I strongly believe that academia and industry are complementary rather than contrasting research environments, with opportunities for each to learn from the other when solving real-world problems. Expertise: Precision metrology, fibre and free-space optics and photonics, optical system design and simulation, laser technologies, noise characterisation. Prior background in distributed acoustic sensing, nonlinear and ultrafast optics, acoustic isolation. Strong analytical and numerical skills. Methodical experimentalist. Extensive experience of MATLAB, Zemax OpticStudio, and LabVIEW. I am accustomed to working to project goals in a team environment, running research projects from conception, through experimental implementation, to analysis and dissemination of results.
