David McCaffrey joined the faculty of the University at Albany of the State University of New York (UAlbany) in 1980 where he remained until retiring in September 2016. He taught and did research mainly in management and organizational studies, law and public policy, authoring or co- authoring three books and many articles, reviews and commissioned reports in those fields. David served six years as a Department Chair and numerous terms in other leadership capacities at the University including 2000-2001 Chair of the University Senate and, internationally, 1998 Program Chair and 1999-2000 Division Chair of the Public and Nonprofit Division of the Academy of Management. He was a central co-founder of a collaboration among UAlbay, Albany Law School and financial and legal organizations to develop research and education in financial market regulation. In 2002 the State University of New York Board of Trustees appointed him to the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor, a rank above Full Professor granted by the SUNY system as a whole. In 2004 UAlbany designated him as a Collins Fellow which "recognizes faculty members who, over a sustained period of time, have exhibited extraordinary devotion to the University and the people in it." David currently is Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus and Collins Fellow at UAlbany.From 2013 to 2016 David volunteered as a dog walker at the Mohawk-Hudson Humane Society near Albany. After moving to Santa Fe in 2016 David volunteered as a dog walker and in other activities at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society (SFASHS) from early 2017 to March 2019. He returned to volunteering at SFASHS in February 2023. Since July 2022 he also volunteers at the Santa Fe events of Española Humane Society. In these activities he has witnessed how potentially strong community interest in and aspirations for animal shelters are extraordinary resources for leaders and managers who are able to effectively channel and develop community engagement and financial support while inspiring those within the shelters to go out of their ways to support the shelters' missions. How well leaders and managers perform in those respects deeply affects animals' lives. David volunteers usually five times a week either in afternoon dog walking at the Santa Fe shelter or at Española's Santa Fe events with 860 hours for SFASHS and 410 hours for Española from January 2023 through August 2024.
