The work involved many SQL Server estates with high availability demands. All usual DBA tasks were involved, from investigating project requirements, through SQL installation, security management and configuration, into in-depth performance analysis, testing, support and remediations. I was called upon to offer consultancy on SQL Server to other areas of the business and for client projects. As SQL Server technology lead my role included engaging with the architecture teams to advise on the best solutions for both new and existing clients, and to provide guidance and direction for issues escalated to me and participation in regular environment audits and DR Test planning and execution. Client estate sizes varied from single-server up to hundreds of SQL Server instances, for which I was a core developer of the automated management scripting suite used to increase the number of instances the DBA team could manage. I was the database sector lead for the manufacturing sector, which involved assigning projects to a small team of DBAs. Production DbaHebble Insurance May 2004 - Sep 2004This contract involved database administration for the IT department’s live servers. The principle environment was a set of clustered SQL 2000 servers, along with a number of other SQL servers, all of which must be maintained. One of the main tasks was data migration from Oracle systems into the SQL environment. Other tasks included all the usual DBA elements, such as database design, database upgrades, security testing and hardening, and the testing and planning of future technology solutions. Also I was involved in the testing and fixing of database performance issues using the SQL profiler and query planning tools. DbaProvident Financial Apr 2003 - Apr 2004This position was as a DBA and a database developer supporting nine SQL Server 2000 servers in a role that is split between administration of the servers and producing SQL queries for the financial management reports. The set up was SQL server 2000 on a Windows Server 2000 network. My responsibilities included query writing and tuning, database creation, back ups and maintenance, DTS package creation, data transfers, replication, user accounts and security and so on. I was also responsible for providing output to managers in the form of Excel or Access driven reports, and for helping others to improve their SQL code. Infrastructure Support And Development TechnicianScapa Tapes Uk Ltd. Jun 1999 - Aug 2000Scapa Tapes is a manufacturer of Industrial technical tapes. As well as selling their own branded tape they also produce some of the tape that is used by 3M and other manufacturers. They run a Windows NT based network, which is European wide, running across a wan with the central site in Dunstable and BDCs in 6 other sites. As part of the Development / 3rd line support team, my major projects whilst at Scapa Tapes were the implementation of a company-wide Intranet and supporting the NT network and email servers. Using the Microsoft IIS and SiteServer platforms, with a SQL server database I was responsible for many of the ASP and JavaScript Intranet pages, bringing the Intranet through prototype stage to a live system. As well as the Intranet, I also carried out 3rd line server support for the NT servers on the Scapa Tapes wan. This included a number of Exchange server site moves, as well as more general NT and Exchange work.
